Since you have a mac, id recommend logic. However, unless you are a student, it is a bit pricey.

Audacity is pretty good actually. Also, check out Reaper. I've heard only good things about it

Audacity is free so if he already has Garageband I don't know why he would use audacity. Garageband is way better.

As for Reaper, I've been using it for the past few weeks and It's pretty good for how inexpensive it is. You can download it and get a month trial just to try it out.

I'm actually fond of Garageband from the little time I've spent with it.

I use Adobe Audition and like it. Have no idea what's better, it's all I've used and I've had good results.

tgh garage band is pretty high up the ladder when it comes to home recording, only logic is better in my limited experience.
