Can anybody think of any hip-hop or rap songs that you actually enjoy, anything that has beautiful melody? Or maybe the lyrics actually speak to you in a way? I think it's a nice thought that we can occasionally find a gem in a genre that contains mostly trash.

T-Pain - Fly Away (Contains actual singing, beautiful background music, nice melody.)
Dr. Dre ft. The white kid and the girl. (Awesome chorus melody, and I like the storyline within the song.)

What about you guys?

De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest. Gotta bust out some Beastie Boys as well.

EDIT: and Lupe Fiasco

What.

Common is one of my favorite lyricists. Early Kanye has some pretty great stuff as well.

You have to dig around a little, most of the best stuff is the most unknown.

Personally, the Gorillaz are the only real rap/hip hop band I like. I've never really been able to get in to anything else.

Eminem from Slim Shady LP to The Eminem Show. He's damn clever with his rhymes. In "Business" he manages to rhyme "orange". Awesome!

now look at what you've done!

you've single-handedly sent me into a 'old school rap mode'

I don't know when I'll come out

OT: I hear this all through elementary school and surprisingly didn't know he said much of that

Listen to Fly Away. It's him singing. And without vocoder! I know, marvelous.

You have no idea how happy it makes me to finally see someone else suggest Cannibal Ox in one of these threads.

Anyways, how 'bout some J5?
