It's a pizzicato of some sort. I'm not even sure it's someone else's work.
sometimes I see us in a cymbal splash or in the sound of a car crash

It's from Leo Delibe's ballet "Sylvia" 3rd movement "Pizzicati"

edit: by ballet I didn't mean the full ballet, I mean the symphonic suite that extracts the main music from the ballet.

...modes and scales are still useless.
