I have a hard rock /pop sounding song in e major and i wanna write a hard sounding solo that still sounds happy kinda like why go by pearl jam. Any tips for scales or shapes or whatever?

...

E major is the obvious choice.

You can use the dorian mode. It's minor, but I think it's the happiest, lightest sounding the of the minor modes. It has a bit of a bluesy, retro feel depending on how you construct your chords and what not.

A Dorian

E|-----------------------------------7-8-10--
B|----------------------------7-8-10---------
G|----------------------5-7-9----------------
D|----------------5-7-9----------------------
A|----------5-7-9----------------------------
E|----5-7-8----------------------------------

I just use A as an example, but you can move this shape anywhere starting on the 6th string.
