Well today I was awoken by a strange and unusual sound... that of the front doorbell going off. Obviously this is highly unusual so I went and answered to find a post office worker standing there with a parcel that had my name on it

Muttering to myself about being woken up for something so small I turned it over to ascertain who had sent me something so inconsequential

Bare-who-what now? Well that certainly doesn't mean anything to me...

...guess I'd better open this up and see what the hell it is...

After much hacking away at the packaging I discovered this inside

Well I certainly don't remember buying any new pickups... whoever these Bare Knuckle people are they're certainly very nice what with all this stuff also inside

...

Ok, I can't keep this up anymore, here's the goods:

This is the BKP Nailbomb I won in the UG/7 String Legion/BKP Raffle. I honestly cannot thank Tim from BKP and our illustrious Legion founder, Nick (godofshred) for this, just... no words can explain it. People always say this but I never win anything!

I cannot wait to get this thing fitted and get clips up... I'm going to have to though because right now I'm skint and can't afford to get it put in

So once again:

Thank you Tim and Nick for putting this thing together, means a lot to me to have not only won this but put money towards Cancer Research UK, those people do incredible, unbelievable work for the individuals and families affected by cancer. If you have any spare cash... go donate anyway. Please.

I saw in a couple of pictures that on Bucketheads Les Paul (only some pictures) that his neck pickup is painted in white. Can anyone explain to me why he would do this, and if there are any pros and cons.

The guy wears a KFC Bucket and a white mask during performances, and you're interested in the color of his pickup covers?

Well I didn't really think about it before Nick said "So what do you want engraved on it?" to me but really it sort of summarises a whole load of things I believe about life, music, playing guitar... just a whole load of things really: listening to people, more than talking over them; listening to more music ,more than talking about which is best; listening to what you're playing, more than just playing and hoping it sounds good... so yeah, lot of crap, all of which sounds vaguely pretentious

I don't own a soldering iron Also it may be a 15 minute job but I'd rather pay them too much and know it's going to be done right rather than put it in my own hands and leave it to a rank amateur who's never so much as held a soldering iron before...

Pick one up for like 15 bucks in a local electronics store, practice on some meaningless shit. It's ridiculously easy honestly. You have two wires to solder in, if you look where your current pickups are soldered in, just solder the wires that look similar to those, in the exact sames pot. 15 bucks versus somewhere from 80 to 100, I think its worth practicing

I'm looking at the wiring right now, comparing to a diagram I found online, looking at the pickup's wires... it doesn't seem to make much sense to me. Obviously I'm an idiot

Edit: Wait, no, something just clicked in my brain when I discovered that the green and white wires *stay* together when it's all done. Still skint and soldering-iron-less though

Plus a trip into the nearest town

I'll talk to my Dad about it when he gets home, see if he can help me out with it at all, I've got the wiring sorted out in theory and everything, I just need to actually physically do it now and I suspect he will be able to help.

...

What do I do for a few hours before he gets home?

If you're paying 80-100 US dollars to have a couple of pickups replaced then you're paying way too much. Find an independent luthier who works out of his house or something. I know a real pro in New York who would do that for 25.

Cheers to all and a quick update: my Dad not only owns a soldering iron but knows how to use it! Clips, pics and comparisons tomorrow when I can reasonably record anything, since it's just about half 10 here now I can't really go playing too loudly, especially not since I'd probably get about 10 minutes of raw footage.

For now I'll just say this:

The video has landed! http://youtu.be/3_Bop0Y_VdQ

Just in case you're lazy and can't be bothered to read the video comments, signal path is thus:

Guit-fiddle
Maxon OD808
ISP Decimator
Korg DT-10 (bypassed)
Blackstar HT-1HR
Framus 2x12 w/ Celestion Vintage 30s.

I was going to do a comparison set of clips but the mic on my camera is... well, it's a webcam mic, it didn't pick up the differences at all, subtle though they are anyway. I'll try and get proper clips recorded if I get the chance but I doubt it really
