A speed run is basically an attempt to beat the game as quickly as possible.

The record for Pokemon Red is around two hours. But that nigguh is insane. My goal is to beat it in under 4 hours. If I can do it in under three, even better. Join me! Download a Pokemon Red ROM and an emulator and play this shit!

RULES:

No cheat codes allowed. IN-GAME GLITCHES ARE TO BE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF.
and yeah, that's pretty much it. Save states are okay.

GUIDELINES:
- as soon as possible, make your text scroll FAST, animation OFF, and battle style SET
- the best starter is squirtle, because he has no trouble with brock or misty (just get dig before you fight her).
- If you want to choose Charmander, there is an easy way to get to Mt. Moon without beating Brock.
- It's best to only use one pokemon for the whole run. It'll be strong enough to beat things it's not very effective against.
- You can bypass the whole casino part with Team Rocket by using a poke-doll on the ghost in Lavender Tower.
- Catching a Zapdos before the Elite four and teaching it thunderbolt from TM will make the end easier.
- Any glitches you know (Mew, Missingno, etc.) can help you out, but can also potentially waste time. Be careful!

My plan -
Use Squirtle until I beat Nugget Bridge
Use Mew Glitch to get Mew.
Pwn!

anyone want to join, you can. I'll record my progress here.

how to get past brock:

To skip Brock, do this. Press start to get the menu. Put the arrow on Save. Press B. In Pewter City go to the guy who takes you to the door of the gym. Try to get the menu up just before you start walking. If you can press save and then turn off the game. Turn the game back on and then the guy will take you to the gym again accept this time instead of being just in front of you he will be a few steps diagonally from you. He will end up on top of the girl who talks about Clefairys. After he leaves you will probably find out he's not where he usually is so go through the place where he was and continue on to Mount Moon

MY UPDATES

UPDATE NUMBER ONE

I just beat Brock. My Squirtle is now at level 13. I've been doing pretty well so far, I just hope my luck continues. The only thing I'm afraid of now is fighting Gary's 5 pokemon in Cerulean. there's no way I can get Mew by then, so It'll just be my ridiculously underpowered wartortle against his pidgeotto and bulbasaur I might waste a minute by getting the mega punch TM in Mt. Moon to make it easier for me.

In-game time: 0:14

UPDATE NUMBER TWO:

After defeating Brock, I destroyed all the necessary bug catchers and lasses and youngsters on the way to mt. moon. squirtle evolved into wartortle! I went through mount moon as a quickly as possible, save a short diversion to get TM01 (mega punch). I beat the hiker in front of the stairs going down because his onix and geodude are one hit kills with a ton of exp. i beat the necessary rocket, the super nerd, and took his helix fossil. I went on my way. I caught two level 10 spearow on my way to cerulean (will explain later). I picked up the hidden rare candy behind that guy's house, and kept it in case I need a revive but don't have any at some point.

Gary was not as bad as it could have been. I had to restart like 10 times until his pidgeotto didn't use sand attack, but other than that, it was all fine. Bulbasaur was pretty easy. For some reason, he didn't vine whip. I just kept using tail whip, switched to my spearow, and pecked his ass to death. Nugget bridge was a snap.

I caught an abra and teleported back to cerulean to heal my weary pokemons. Begin Mew glitch:

1- walk to the patch of grass where I caught abra
2 - walk south one square, right when the trainer becomes visible, and press start ASAP
3 - teleport Abra back to Cerulean.
4 - guy notices me, but i fly away first.
5 - start button doesn't work, I go into cerulean gym and fight the first swimmer (horsea and shellder)
6 - kill horsea, and use growl 6 times on shellder using my spearow. the second was a backup if the first one fainted. Kill shellder.
7 - go up to nugget bridge, see MEW! (at level one instead of 7, because I used growl six times on shellder).
8 - catch mew at full health with a poke-ball (using my super secret button combination that turns poke-balls into masterballs)
9 - go to patch of grass where I caught my spearow, let out lv 1 mew, switch out to wartortle, kill spearow.
10 - Because the game didn't intend to make level one pokemon (the exponential experience growth is made in a way that level one = negative xp. If i gain less than 54xp, i'm still in the negative, and the game will boost it to level 256, which reverts automatically to 100.
11 - I have a level 100 mew and one badge!

the time is 0:52. I have one hour to beat the game.

UPDATE NUMBER THREE:
Got my mew, went straight through the trainers blocking me from getting to bill. got my SS ticket, and teleported back to cerulean (holyshit this abra is going to save me so much time until i get fly).
-beat misty, taught mew bubblebeam. now it knows pound and bubblebeam.
-bought a bunch of repels
-went to veridian, made sure NOT to use the pokecenter.
- beat gary at SS anne, got cut, watched ship leave
- traded a spearow for "dux", everyone's favorite farfetch'd, taught dux cut
- beat lt. surge, got my thunderbadge. the bins were a pain.
- got my bike voucher from the fan club dude
- TELEPORTED BACK TO CERULEAN because I didn't use the veridian pokecenter.
- got my bike, cut bush, and I'm on my way to rock tunnel.

game time: 1:15. I don't think i'm going to make 2 hours

UPDATE NUMBER FOUR:

used repels and went through rock tunnel easily.
biked to celadon
beat erika
went to store, bought pokedoll and two fresh waters
gave a fresh water to girl on roof, got ice beam
taught mew ice beam. mew now has pound, ice beam, thunderbolt (from lt surge), bubblebeam
got fly and taught it to dux
flew to lavender town
beat gary, beat tower, poke-dolled ghosts, beat rockets, rescued fuji, got flute
flew to celadon, beat snorlax, went to fuscia, beat koga
went to safari zone, got gold teeth and surf, taught mew surf
taught wartortle dig and dug out of the safari zone
flew to celadon
biked to saffron, gave water to guard, got psychic TM from guy, didn't teach it to mew yet
went to silph co, got card key, beat gary, beat giovanni.

game time: 1:57

goddamnit

FINAL UPDATE:

beat sabrina
flew to pallet town
swam down to cinnabar
got secret key
beat blaine
flew to viridian
beat giovanni
on the way to victory road, i beat gary
finished victory road with no random battles or trainer battles!
taught mew psychic
destroyed every member of the elite four with one hit. (thunderbolt on lorelei, surf on bruno, psychic on agatha, thunderbolt on lance's gyarados, ice beam
the rest, and just super-effective'd everything on gary's team except alakazam, who went down with a thunderbolt (critical hit may have saved me there).
FINAL GAME TIME: 2:34. not bad at all!

Does the game record your time or you are you recording the time separately (with emulator or other)?
The content of this signature is pretty much irrelevant
#9
play it on an emulator and u can speed the game up to about 800% normal speed

The game records your time. on the start menu, just go to where it says your name, and it shows you your badges, game time, and moneyz.

I'm going to attempt it since I have the rest of the day to kill. I have the VBA emulator so I can just hold spacebar to speed it up. Is that allowed?

You still need HM02 for that glitch Which you get in west of Celadon City, you have quite a few things to do between Nugget Bridge and Celadon if i remember correct.

it's allowed, but the game time also speeds up if you do that. If everything is faster, your movements are less exact and you'll waste quite a bit of time bumping into things.

totally. the legendary birds are a pain to get to, though, except zapdos. But you know how those level 165 pokemon appear at the coast of cinnabar sometimes? the pokemon that appear depend on your name. You can change your name to make a level 179 mewtwo appear or something.

Yeah, and the time for you to perform the mew glitch will probably put you behind on time. Especially since that Mew is level 7.

you can do it in cerulean

use an Abra to teleport you back to the pokecenter, defeat either the gym trainer with the horsea and shellder, or the youngster with the level 17 slowpoke, and mew will appear on nugget bridge

by using growl 6 times on the shellder, the mew somehow becomes level 1. The game didn't intend for level one pokemon to exist, so if it gains any experience (below 54 exp, as that will bring it up to an "intended" level, it will bump straight up to 100.

I thought it only worked in that western bridge of Lavender Town?

EDIT: And you still have to fly away from the trainer in the very west of Lavender, don't you?
