Maybe a used Mexican Strat? They sure beat the quality of the Squiers, and you'll be set with it for a good few years. Or maybe a higher end Epiphone.

Epiphones are great entrance level guitars....

Fender Strats or Tele's are great

Schecter makes AWESOME guitars for cheap...

PRS makes really good guitars, but thats a bit more at the higher end of your spectrum

ESP (in my opinion) makes some of the best guitars out there...i've been a fan of them for YEARS
