Is there a key for reading tabs, e.g., stars, double lines between sections, parentheses, up "^" symbols? Thanks for any help...

yeh

more often than not there's a 'legend' at the top,

a common legend looks like this
/-slide down
\-slide up
^-bend
(3/2)-legato slide
R(`)-release bend
p-pulloff
h-hammeron
~-vibrato
X-muffled strings
.-short note
{}-raked notes
o-repeat rhythm
----
| 3 |-triplet notes
||-end of riff
=-let note ring
%-repeat bar
P.M.-palm mute
P.H.-pinch harmonic
(sb)-slight bend

alternatively this link will talk you through how to properly read tabs

Sometimes tabs have a legend but, if it doesn't you can look up tabs for "Stairway to Heaven" and click the one with the highest rating and at the bottom of that tab it'll have a legend so, you can use that for reference.
