I dyed my guitar using aniline dyes which are water and alcohol soluble. Everything came out great and I'm using shellac to finish and lock in the colour. Problem is shellac is only alcohol soluble. I use methyl hydrate to thin my shellac but when brushing the shellac on, the dyes begin to run and mess up the colours. I've put on at least 5 coats of shellac letting it dry completely but I'm still getting colour running when applying new coats. I'm thinking of taking some simple automotive clear coat and spraying a thin layer over the current finish to seperate the colour and shellac before shellacking any further. Would this react in any way I'd need to worry about or is it fine?
