Match impedances.

Just measure the impedance of the cab to make sure if it's 8 or 16 ohms.

Get yourself a cheap multimeter from Radio Shack or HomeDepot. It shouldn't cost you more than $20. Measure it yourself.
The multimeter will come in handy in the future.

To measure the whole cab, plug in a cable and measure tip to sleeve. It will be slightly lower than the AC impedance but will give you a general idea of what the the cab is rated.

How many speakers is in this?
It may be worth it to open the cab and check each speaker individually. You could then possibly rewire it to be a different impedance.

Tip to sleeve? I assume you mean of the cabs jack correct? The tip is what makes contact with the speaker cable but what is the sleeve? My dad has a multimeter so I can borrow it I just need to know how to test the entire cab.
plug in a speaker cable and measure the cable's end. put your dmm on the lowest resistance range and clip one probe to the plug's side and the other probe to the plug's tip.
