Learn your functional harmony and analyse their music. What are the harmonic/textural/melodic/dynamic elements of the music?

Writing like Bach is worlds apart from writing like Beethoven, they come from different musical periods.

If you're serious, the normal route is to enroll in college-level classes in music history, compositon, theory, arranging.... All that stuff. A Masters in the field would be a good start.

Now, if you're a genius with a huge amount of talent, you can probably sit down with your instrument and start composing.... There are a few of those around, but they're rare. Mozart started writing serious music at what, age 7?

What was wrong with my sentence?

Oh sorry nothing, you mentioned the time difference between the two composers, I thought 'or' may make more sense
