The title doesn't really give an insight into what I'm after...

Anyway, I went to see Derren Brown last Friday (the mind trickery guy), and the music playing before, in the interval and after the show was something I hadn't really heard before.
Each song seemed to start off like Big Band Jazz played off an old grammaphone sorta thing, but then new agey beats kicked in and there was some editing of the original tracks that were being "remixed" (or whatever suitable word there is, I can't think of how to describe it, hence the reason I'm asking!).

It wasn't quite trip hop, and it didn't really fit as acid jazz, and it's definitely not a form of regular jazz, it seems to be some kind of electronic music which utilises big band jazz as it's basis.

Does anyone know what it could be? Or give some search parameters, artists, songs, etc which would fit this.

Also, I can't name any of the tunes which were used in the songs, I'm much more of a Bebop and Fusion kinda guy than a big band/swing guy.

If anyone could help I'd be very happy as I'd really like to listen to some of it again.

The best I can help you with is Jazz/Rap, like Gang Starr (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPkguHDkWQc), A Tribe Called Quest (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gnhOmcbwN0), Digable Planets (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cM4kqL13jGM), and Us3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwBjhBL9G6U) to name a few. I know it's not exactly what you're looking for, you'll probably enjoy some of it

Closest thing I can think of is Kid Koala.

Is the new Derren Brown show good?

Why do we feel it's necessary to yak about bullsh*t in order to be comfortable?

That's when you know you found somebody special. When you can just shut the f*ck up for a minute, and comfortably share silence.

That stuff doesn't seem a million miles away from what I want, but not quite there, though I'll keep looking through that stuff cos it's sounding cool.

And yeah it's pretty good, it seems to follow the same sort of formula of most of his shows, but it was very entertaining. Met him afterwards too, he seems a very friendly guy.

Helpful search terms:

Electro Swing/Electro Jazz
Nu Jazz

and if that doesn't work, search for the White Mink, Black Cotton compilations.
