I'm a little confused as to what these are. I was looking at Telecasters with humbuckers at GuitarCenter. However, the only Tele with those was a Blacktop. I have also seen Blacktop Jags and Strats, but they are a little bit at low price range.

Does anyone have any experience with these? Just looking to clear stuff up.

Mexican Standards, usually with 22 frets not 21, and REALLY shitty humbuckers.

They feel good to me, they just sound terrible.

Well looks like I'll be avoiding these then! Thank you.

I'd say at least try one or two out. They're cheap and very easy to mod.
Actually, I go by Dave, but there are already too many Daves on this forum.

Fender Jaguar Bass
Epiphone EJ200 Super Jumbo
Fender Excelsior 13w

The pickups aren't crap...you just can't dial in a good sound on the amp.

That's the advantage of being such a distance from Yianni. I can continue to live my life without fear of stumbling upon his dark terror.

That does it. I'm finally making my first post. I can't keep lurking around here while people hate on my beloved Blacktop Jaguar. Although I'll probably go back into lurking after this post.

Every guitar player has different preferences, and every guitar is different. You shouldn't choose a guitar based on what someone on the internet tells you (I mean absolutely no disrespect to hawk5211. I know you know your shit, you've been around much longer than me). But the only way to tell if you like a guitar is if you go to the store and actually play it.

So go play and have fun! NOW!

I bought a Blacktop Jaguar not long ago at giveaway price Aus of $640. I was a bit unsure and had thought i had bought a fake or a Squier, but then realised its part of the Blacktop range. I was completely blown away by the quality of it, its top of the line. They use Kluson tuners, alder, maple, Seymour and Duncan style pickups, Gotoh bridge and tailpiece. Its incredible value. Awesome Shape, Awesome Size, Awesome Colour, The whole aspect to it being simplified doesn't affect my judgement of it, because i'm not used to the old jaguar switches (that should be saved for the 'Special's). its just a regular guitar with a pickup selector and tone vol control. And did I mention that i can't keep my eyes off it and can't stop playing it? Its like i'm in a dream world.

I just didn't like the Black skirted Amp knobs, so i took them off and in the process ripped out my tone pot. no biggy. i got mustang knobs for aus$7 (three shades of black including pickguard, knobs and body) Though might get chrome domes unsure for now.

I got a Wilkinson Wigsby for aus$50-60

And a Wilkinson Rolling Bridge for aus$20

Together they look alright (this isn't actually my guitarvvvvvvv It was built by Tom Du Pre)

All i have to do is get the local Guitar tech to help me rout a cavity smaller than a tim tam in my guitar and mount the stuff.

I'm already eyeing up some chrome Sperzel 6 inl lockers for aus$50 that i may purchase in the near future.

The HH pickups are some of the best pickups i've ever played.

A friend of mine collects Fenders, owning thousands of aus$ worth of equipment, and he says his favourites are the Mexicans.

As you can see my Guitar has only cost me aus$707 plus tech quotes. So thats $800 saved over buying a Vintage American Reissue. No more to be said than that!! ps. and all that chrome is ****ing madness. like its been assembled piece by piece from Roswell UFO scrap and it could potentially shoot laser beams.

You know your shit as well. The net is great for learning about guitars to avoid for quality reasons (I'm thinking Ibanez Edge III bridge, things like that), but tone is all up to you. Different music, different ears, different equipment, simple as that. I was actually about to comment telling OP not to avoid them simply due to my comment, since I'm a single coil freak when it comes to fenders lol. Cheers!

Whoever said something about getting on and modding it, very good plan. If the cash comes around I was thinking about getting a black one with the nice maple boards they are putting on them, swapping in some lace sensors and making a nice clapton/gilmour strat. I've always wanted to do that with a mexican strat, but they have always had 21 frets and weird neck weighting. These blacktop ones seem to have both of those issues fixed.

Thank you everyone for their posts. I'm certainly going to try one, but as of now I'm sold on the American Standard Tele. I'm assuming I can mod it (yes/no?) if I desire.

I was always a little suspicious of them, but I tried one out and they played really nice. I think I might buy one and tear it apart and mod the bejeezus out of it.

Also, can we get some recognition for the extraordinary amount of decency that was shown in this thread? I mean, this is a big deal.

You can mod as much as you like; teles are easy to work on, since you can have the strings on while testing the eelctronics/wiring.

These guitars are a modders dream. They are cheapish, but not low end at all. Go onto ebay, there are lots of styles of pickups, tuners, bridges, knobs, switches, tremelos, tailpieces, pickguards, heads, necks, pots, electronics, panels, nuts, bodies, all good quality brands. you could even strip the paint by using a heat gun thats a cool idea. sand it , varnish it would look great give it a nice treatment you would have a gorgeous guitar. I think you can take off the chrome covers to leave the pickups underneath too, like in other gibsons and epiphone models. remember you don't have to spend a lot of money. So don't buy $250 tv jones pups or $100 schallers lockers just because they are the more expensive brands. they are both very specialised and i wouldn't promote them at all. I like Wilkinson its ****ing sweet gear, Sperzel too! I bought all my stuff through Gene Koebler at trickeoutguitar and seyanne from ABSOLUTE BEST GUITARS and MUSIC.

Go out and customize!
