i'm driving roughly 8 hrs from Winnipeg to Minneapolis in a few weeks with some friends to see the Mountain Goats.

Well for driving i usually listen to Protest The Hero, Every Time I Die, Maylene And The Sons of Disaster.... But since this is indie and alternative...
Bloc Party does the trick sometimes, The Subways-All For Nothing album is perfect too
