My local Guitar Center has a JSX (new) for like $800.
Used ones are usually $650ish.

Should I go used or spend the extra money for a new one?

Is a warranty worth $150 to you?

Will GC give you some purchase coverage?
Did they do any servicing on the amp before?
Are the tubes changed?

Usually I'd go for the used if the answer to the above question is yes, however, I'd recommend you test out the amp before hand to be sure.

Well, here's a big point -
All the used JSX's I've seen aren't local. I wouldn't be able to try them out.

Then you have to make a cost-return analysis.

Is the trip to test the amp worth the cost of the trip?

If no, is the cost of absorbing the risk worth the difference in prices?

If no, are you willing to accept the risk of getting an amp with a problem?

If no, then buy new.

That is a 'fair' price. I've seen many for sale, and they go for around $800 used. Is that reasonable relative to new? Not sure... but I do have a JS mini-colossal... I love the tone (with pedals and the right guitar) and can emulate the Satriani tone. But this is a basic amp. With the JSX head, you have a lot more possibilities. It's also hard to come by, now that he's with Marshall. If I didn't have an Egnator amp head, or the mini colossal, I would buy one.

$650 used? I've rarely seen under $800....

Anyway, you might want to check if the one GC has is actually "new." I've come across used amps hiding behind a "new" sticker a couple times there...sometimes even broken ones. $800 is really low for a new one if it really is new. Even if there is a used for $650, I would be a little sketched out, and $800 for a new one would be a really good deal.

Anyway, I love my JSX even though it's broken right now. I just took it to a tech who seems to know his shit much more than the previous people I've taken it to. Apparently the problem was just some shitty soldering someone had done before... Very excited to be getting it back soon.
