so i'm not really sure how to describe this song. i've been told it's got kinda an 'island' feel to it.

it goes Bb Ebmaj7 Cm7 F
e|--------6-----6-------3-----5------------------
B|--------6-----8-------4-----6------------------
G|--------7-----7-------3-----5------------------
D|--------8-----8-------5-----7------------------
A|--------8-----6-------3-----8-----------------
E|--------6-----------------------------------

and i play some rakes between the chords to give it knd of a funky feel. then i've got an electric guitar with a little dist. playing power chords on the G and B string.

so any scale ideas? i've just been messing around with pentatonic and blues.

Your song's in Eb major, so go with one of the modes from that key.

I have no idea what you mean by 'island' feel, but that sounds like either mixolydian or lydian. So go with either Bb mixolydian or C lydian.

and then there's free jazz, which isn't even for musicians.

As my old guitar teacher once said: Metal really comes from classical music. The only difference is pinch harmonics, double bass, and lyrics about killing goats.

C Lydian is diatonic to G major ...

not to mention the song is in Bb, not Eb.

I-IV-ii-V makes a lot more harmonic sense than V-I-vi-V/V

Actually it looks like it's written in Bb major
It could be in Eb but he didn't add the Ab anywhere.....

Bb major.

that's the only scale you'll ever use over this progression -- anything else is the simple use of accidentals.
Anfangen ist leicht, Beharren eine Kunst.

Key change to F!

But yeah, using pentatonic is a good idea for between the chords, or a second guitar during the chords.....

Blues scale to make riffs for that might sound awesome. I have no way to try that right now though, I'm in class.

I can write a coherent tune ... But 3/4? I play rock, not polka.
