Alright, so I've grown tired of my little Vox Pathfinder 15W, and I am looking to buy an amp for band practice/gigging, hopefully leaning more towards gigging. Only problem is, I know very little about amps, but according to the sticky in the best case scenario I am searching for an all-tube amp that is 30-45W.( This doesnt mean I am not open to buying SS amps)
I want this thread to be less of a specific what amp I should buy and more of a steer me toward what kind of amps I should be looking at, but feel free to give specific recommendations.

I am open to buying used.

Purpose - Band Rehearsal/Gigging

Budget - $300-$500 ($500 is kinda pushing it though.)

Closest City - Houston, TX

Genre - Funk/Rock, blues to a lesser extent(John Frusc fan). To give you an idea of what I am looking for I want some nice cleans (think Can't Stop guitar tone), and distortion like that in Lithium/Lounge Act - Nirvana.

I play a MIM Strat with a humbucker in it if that makes any difference.

A used peavey classic 30 and an o/d pedal of some kind would work, maybe a boss ds-1 or ds-2 for a Nirvana style distortion.

http://houston.craigslist.org/msg/2407265906.html Out of yr budget, but I would honestly save/beg/borrow the extra cash for this baby.

http://houston.craigslist.org/msg/2405242907.html No gain on it's own, but you need a Boss DS-1 for the Nirvana tone anyway.

http://houston.craigslist.org/msg/2393789150.html Another one worth finding the extra cash for.

thanks for the responses guys I'll look into it. And another question I have is what exactly is a combo amp? Is it like tubes and SS or something?

No, a combo amp is just one with the speakers built in, as opposed to a head/cab setup.

= Combo

= head/cab, aka stack.

+1 to the Fender suggestions, a HRD plus a good distortion pedal will serve you well. You might want to get the DS-1 modded though if you go that route.
