Here's my surprisingly adequate explanation:

Icarus was being unrealistic when he wanted to fly with his wax wings, too close to the sun. Bring him back to reality, the sun melted his wings and brought him "down to earth."

The "earth" is a dance that is often performed while tripping on ecstasy. Asking someone if they are "down to earth" simply implies that you want to "earth" with them.
