i play in my church's worship band and my pastors been wanting me to incorporate my electric into sunday service. we currently only have acoustic guitars and a violin. i feel as though you need a bass for electric guitar to sound good. maybe im thinking too heavily.

what are UG's thoughts.

I play at church all the time; bass definitely should be a priority over electric

People seem to think The Black Keys and The White Stripes sound good.

That's cause Jack White slipped a lot of bass guitar and left hand piano/organ into his studio recordings

I don't own any Black Keys albums, but I've heard some bass on their recordings as well a fair number of their recordings as well.

No no no, it's because jack white always turns the bass.

All the way up.

I haven't really heard much from either of them so I'll take your word for it

i agree we need bass so im not the only one who thinks so. do you guys think that there would be a problem with acoustics and electric picking. its not "rock" church or anything.

We've got drums, bass, electric and acoustic guitars among more traditional instruments in my church, and we're not exactly a rock church either.

Stop thinking about it so much.

Just play with what sounds good.

An acoustic/electric acoustic, electric, bass, drums.

Bam, generic church band.

No. bass is only necessary if you have a friend who really really wants to be in the band but all the real positions are taken.

If you're having electric guitar you need bass. And for bass you need drums. WIth this extra rhythm section you need a rhythm guitar to tie it all in. But then the melody gets lost so you need to add a screamo singer to cut through the noise.

Just trying to get a fuller sound? Push your lows and mids up and you'll be fine.

I play bass in the church band. It would suck without me.

And jack white uses an octave pedal
I'm selling an ernie ball wah pedal. Buy my ernie ball wah pedal.

Strumming chords is hard yo?

Get a bass. Guitar and drums sounds weak without bass most of the time.

If you only have acoustics + vocals now, and can only add an electric or a bass, I'd say electric. It'll sound better with just the two other things. You can arpeggiate the acoustic chords or something. If you've got drums, then definitely add the bass. You need that rhythm section in what I'd imagine your church is doing. (Pop-ish praise songs?) I think the ideal setup is vocals, acoustic, electric, bass, drums, keyboard/piano.
