maybe this should've been in techniques forum? but i thought it would be a nice discussion.
now originally i've learned that the G chord should be 320003 from E low to E high.
now my thing is that i hardly play this one when using an open G. i play it with the 3th fret on the B string added so 320033, i think it sounds better.

now i was wondering if i was the only one that, more often, plays this chord than the 'official' G . haven't really seen many guitarists play the chord the way i play it.

Depends on the song I'm playing really. If it can use a brigther sound or chord I add the D

with the open b it sounds a little too happy for me, and the d definitely makes it more thick. i use 320033

The chord G consists of the noted G,B and D. As long as you play those three notes, you play the G chord. It does not matter if you play the b string as B or D.

within 5 minutes already 2 people using them. how come no guitarist in town uses this chord?! xD

i know this theory but you do agree that the b string played as a d makes it sound a lot different?

I add in the D, but then I Don't play the B on the A string either, as I find playing thirds on the bottom strings sounds pretty muddy, so I play 3x0033, which is really a G5, but unless the song specifically requires the standard 320003 voicing I can usually get away with it. It's also useful to have an extra finger free for extensions/substitutions.

I originally learned the open B string one, then when I was learning 'Time of your life', I started using the one with the extra D. I thought it sounded a lot better and fuller than the other shape, so stuck with it. Not only that, I personally think that it allows you to do a lot of awesome things when arpeggiating the chord as well.

But because I've been sporting a broken index finger for the past week, and will be doing so for the next 5, I've had to go back to the open B string shape, much to my disappointment

Which one I use depends on what chord I previously played and what chord I want to play next, or whether or not I want to emphasise the D or the B note. It's all about efficiency of movement with your fretting hand and needs of the song.

I play both, but usually the open B version because it's easier to switch to C, Am etc. (I play the shape without my index finger). But sometimes the extra D version is vital (everyone knows how to play Wonderwall!).

i honestly don't i know the song and probably can play it after a listen but my chick magnet song usually is far away by nickelback, somehow every girl likes that song xD

interesting to see the many reactions! thanks a lot!

I usually play 320033 cause it switchs to D so easy but I also use 3x0003, 3x003x, 355433 and 3x543x depending on what im playing and what chords im switching to. I dont really like the 320003 one.

This. Just sounds better.

I originally learned the G chord with an open B. When I started guitar lessons my teacher told me it was "old fashioned" and showed me the 320033 one. I usually use that one now but sometimes I'll use the open B string. It just depends on the song and feel I want.

I hardly ever play the B on the A-string though. As Sonny_sam said, it makes it sound muddy. Same goes for a D on the A string, for the E-shaped barre. As always, it all depends on the song and on the chords that precede and follow it.
I do not want to have a signature anymore.

x-10-12-12-12-10. That's the ONLY way to go.

Just kidding. I usually play it with the open B, but sometimes add the D if I think it would sound better.
#22
Usually, 3x0033. That leaves the index finger hanging around for hammer-ons and such.
#23
Wow, lotta hate for the 320003 fingering. I think I'm the first here to say I like it more. I do use the 320033 fingering sometimes if it makes things easier ("Over the Hills and Far Away" by Zeppelin comes to mind) but it sounds too bright and full for me. The 320003 fingering has a raw, thin sound to it that works better for what I'm usually doing, I guess. In a lot of my progressions the 320033 sounds plain wrong... Who knows. 3x0033 sounds cool though, I may try that.

I play the 320033 just sounds "better" to me.

Most times I play 320033, sometimes the bar chord 355433 and very rarely 320003.
#27
I usually play 320033 for my G chord and I always try to add tension to the other chords in chord progression to keep xxxx33. But that's up to the song and overall tone of course.

Some oldschool songs in my country really need 320003 since 320033 sounds too bright and being uncool for those songs.

I almost always play it 320033. I am not accustomed to writing the numbers out, haha I am a newbie. I think that is right, though. This way helps me get to the D chord

I play it one of 2 ways. The first is the big G that looks like 320033 and the second is the odd fingered 320003 G where my pinky holds down the high E string - it helps w/ transitions to the C, Am E and F chords.
G(g)od was like: "Make you an ark of gopher wood; rooms shall you make in the ark, and shall pitch it within and without with pitch."

And i was like: "What's gopher wood?"

i know this theory but you do agree that the b string played as a d makes it sound a lot different?

You are playing a B on the A string.

You make a statement like thee is some alternate "theory" --- a G major chord is the tones G, B and D sounded together.

It sounds like you might not really know the fretboard ... it would be a worthwhile exercise to learn where G, B and D are on each string and find other places to play the chord to enhance your musical knowledge.

e.g.

3 5 5 4 3 3

x x 9 7 8 7

x 5 O O 3 7

x 10 9 7 8 x

x x O O O x

x 10 12 12 12 10

x 10 O O O 10

etc etc etc

^ This. If there's a G, B and D, it's a G major. What form it takes doesn't really matter.

Originally I learned it with the open B, but now I can't even force myself to do it. the D just sounds better, and is easier IMO to play and move to other chords.

320033, Always.

I learnt this one first, and didnt even know of the official "open B" chord shape until much much later...feels unnatural not to fret the extra B string.
#35
003 originally, but to 'fill' the sound out, added the D to the B string, so it's 033 for me too.
#37
Depends.

If I'm playing classic rock, which I usually do, I mute the A string with my middle finger, which is playing the G on the low E. I'll always put the D in there on the B string though. Always.
