I've heard you guys use this phrase several times...is it just sitting down with the piano/guitar and matching pitches to warm up? Just need a bit of clarification.
Nothing that is worthwhile in life will ever come easy.

Use the instrument to sing warm-up scales chromatically. (IE start with Cmajor, then c# major, then d major, etc) If the instrument is slightly out of tune and cannot easily be tuned by you (like a piano) then this will accomplish 2 things at once: warmup for your voice, and acclimation for your ears to the tuning of the instrument).

Yes, you sing first, then pluck a certain note on the guitar or piano and try to match it. Keep going until you match the note. This is the key note for the key that the song is written in.

This is important because if you don't sing the lyrics in the same key as the rest of the song, then I'm afraid it won't sound very good.
