in my country when you go to the movies especially if you are mid or mid lower class usually people, especially young males, like 10-20 used to don't buy food at the cinema like pop corns, or nachos instead they buy stuff at the store and they hide it in their pockets, or their sleeves or anywhere they can.

this is basically for three reason: food is like 3 or 4 times more expensive in the cinema that in another place, something although of it's prices the food isn't even good, and I don't know it's a little fun, I get used to do this since I was a child. one year ago I go to the movies with eight friends, and with 12 bucks we could buy at a wallmart chips, cookies, donnuts, soda, juice, nachos and candy's for all of us, hide all in our jackets and eat all of it while watching the movie.

I have seen cultural references of this in for example tv shows of my country, but never on shows from the united states, canda or europe, so people in your country use to do this?, also do you think it is wrong?

NEW: what has been the largest thing that you have tried to get into a cinema with you?

ALSO: what has been the funniest experience that you have had doing this?

Yeah, me and my friends would do it. My gran would too but my mum never bothered.

I do it every time. I will NOT pay 3 bucks for a water when I can get one at the store for like 89 cents.

Going with my sister, mom, or just someone with a purse is always awesome. Then you get to put tons of stuff, maybe another drink, and some candy.

I always take my own refreshments when I go to the cinema, not openly though, I sneak them in under my jacket.

It's way more expensive to go to the cinema now than it used to be, even taking inflation into account. And with the prices of their refreshments, you can soon spend more on them than you did on the ticket. When you add a family into the equasion, that soon turns into an expensive trip.
What used to be a cheap form of entertainment for the family has now turned into something that poorer families can only afford occasionaly.

I'm from the united states and yes I hide stuff to bring into the movies.
Just not on dates.

EDIT: I've often gone home with an empty wallet after taking a couple of people to the movies with me.

My local cinema isn't to bad. Only £2.50 a ticket so I don't mind spending money on popcorn or drinks there.

They sell beers and stuff too.

I always do that. There's a newsagents across the road from the cinema that capitalises hugely on people doing that, they've got so much food and popcorn and shit you can buy.
You're using UG classic, congratulations.

Yeah, someone do, someone don't.

Though the popcorn you buy at the cinemas are hot and delicious; better than the vacuum packed stuff you get at stores, though that is quite good as well.

We do it in Australia too. I once managed to sneak a McDonalds milkshake in my jumper front pocket (that big one that has a hole on each end) sideways, with no spilling at all. I was quite pleased with myself.

Reminds me of the time my family and I went to see I Am Legend, we ordered so much shit from Burger King, they had to give us two huge ****ing bags to put it all in, and we just walked in with all of it, no-one gave half a ****

I just flirt up the girl in the cinema kiosk and I'll get some for free. Then I might buy some popcorn lolol.

Seriously though, I rarely buy stuff in the kiosk.

It used to be okay to bring your own stuff in Australia. Most people (even rich people) smuggle stuff, unless they want fresh popcorn.

The food prices, and even the ticket prices these days are criminal anyway. I don't at all regret sneaking into many many movies when I was younger and not worried about being responsible for my own actions.

A confectionary and snack store set up right outside our cinema and they got muscled out of business in less than a couple of months.

I recently went to see "Thor" in theaters (epic scenes though plot line could have been better) and inquired as to the reason why the prices were so high at the concession stand. dude behind the counter told me that the rent was way high on the theater itself and so used high prices to compensate. though, personally i heard that the theater only receives income from the concessions and ticket sales go to the bigwigs in Hollywood. don't know if that's true though. l

Yeah, it may even still be, I think it depends on the cinema franchise. Greater Union used to let us take what we wanted inside, but now all the local Greater Unions are gone and Grand Cinema are dicks about food.

Privately owned ones can be leniant, but Greater Union/BCC/etc and I suspect any other chains/franchises are dicks.

Considering the ticket price is already almost 20 dollars, I can't even buy that most of the time let alone buy snacks at their crazy prices..

Or if the stupid movie is in the ever so pointless IMAX, oh man. Prepare to shell out some 30 bucks or something a ticket

No thanks. I'll stay home and watch movies in other ways.

I do this openly every time I go to the cinema, and I've never been stopped.
When some stranger on the internet says it is so, it must be so.

I think some movies are worth to pay to see on IMAX like Batman the dark knight, it really worth those extra money.

Im more annoyed by 3d some like avatar was worthy, but others like clash of the titans were just shit, simply I don't like it, I mean it's unecessary and makes the screen looks dim.

The biggest thing has been a bag of pop corn from home and a bottle of wine.
Normally I just buy the snacks at the theater.

O'er here in Holland a movie ticket'll cost ya anywhere between 8 and 12 euros (and up to 14 or 15 for an Imax 3D movie ). That's like 12-20 American dollars depending on which cinema you choose to go to. Add a beer and a large bucket of popcorn (7 more euros if I'm not mistaken) and you'll start to realize why most movie theaters aren't packed with high school students like in most other countries I've been to (well, that and the fact that those kiddo's usually download their movies nowadays)

So yeah, ever since I've been going to the movies on a regular basis again I also took up the habit of sneaking in food. Most Dutchies are too decent to do the same anyways, so the people in charge of security don't even bother checking your bags. Now compare that to, say, Mexico where I remember going to the "VIP cinema" (they had like big comfy lounge chairs and you could order sushi and sh*t) for like 60 pesos (5 dollars). You could score a "regular" movie ticket for 34 pesos, and they even had a "discount wednesday" (which means I payed about 2 dollars to see Matrix Revolutions, and it STILL felt like a giant ripoff )

Here's the thing tho: you couldn't sneak in a roll of mentos into that place without being escorted out

Yeah, my friends and I do this whenever we go, I don't want to spend like £3 on a cup of pepsi. I remember a story about someone trying to sneak a barbecue into the cinema.
Call me Matthew.
