I got really drunk, dropped some acid and found myself about 12 feet away from a black bear. Though you should know.

Practice, Practice and Practice...

All in all, try using your trem picking for as long as you can, and increase with increments of like.. 10 seconds or something.

Make sure you're completely relaxed and then just treat it like a marathon: do it for as long as possible, shake it out and recover then do it again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. ad nauseum.

use a metronome
increase the tempo until you can't play cleanly anymore, and keep practising at that until you find it slow and repeat the process till you can trem pick
worked for me

That.

Oh yeah, and definitely learn some Amon Amarth. A huge part of their sound is tremolo picking.

You CAN play anything with anything....but some guitars sound right for some things, and not for others. Single coils sound retarded for metal, though those who are apeshit about harpsichord probably beg to differ.
