I listen to : BTBAM, The Red Chord, Glass Casket, Protest the Hero, Ion Dissonance, Opeth, Converge, Botch, Job For a Cowboy, The Mars Volta, Dillinger Escape Plan, Vanisher...

I'm looking for stuff with either: legitimate musicianship and flow (Opeth with their whole acoustic to electric and all that atmosphere junk), or totally badass metal riffery.

Vocal wise: Adam Cody from Glass Casket is my favorite vocalist for this kind of stuff, pig squeals are a big no-no. Preferably nothing like Jake Bannon with the screachiness (Axe to Fall era vocals are fine). And no lame singing (looking at you A Hero A Fake), more like Opeth or Protest the Hero clean vocals.

And for the love of god, no deathcore please, I can't take one more god damn "br00talz breakdown".

I like technicality with good taste, such as Ion Dissonance or Dillinger. Beneath the Massacre kind of stuff = no

I appreciate the help, I'm trying to expand my horizons a bit.

Death Metal

Death Metal songs are constructed from a series of multiple riffs, thrown together in a "riff-salad" fashion. Thematically similar riffs provide nuanced repetition, while drastic, often unexpected, tempo changes create a jarring effect. Riffs are generally totally chromatic melodies meant to provide a distorting and horrifying impact, while unrelenting rhythm pummels the listener. Concepts of death, war, decay, evil, religion, torture, and other horrifying truths are amoralistically examined within the lyrics.

Starting Points:
Cannibal Corpse - Eaten Back To Life ~ Tomb Of The Mutilated
Death - Scream Bloody Gore
Deicide - Deicide
Dismember - Like an Ever-Flowing Stream
Entombed - Left Hand Path

The Best:
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
Deicide - Legion
Gorguts - Obscura
Incantation - Onward to Golgotha
Massacra - Enjoy the Violence
Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Demilich - Nespithe
Morpheus Descends - Ritual of Infinity
Autopsy - Severed Survival

Primary Essentials:
Cryptopsy - None So Vile
Demigod - Slumber of Sullen Eyes
Gorguts - Considered Dead ~ Erosion of Sanity
Immolation - Dawn of Possession ~ Close to a World Below
Incantation - Diabolical Conquest
Infester - To the Depths... In Degredation
Massacra - Final Holocaust
Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick ~ Covenant
Necrophobic - The Nocturnal Silence
Order From Chaos - Stillbirth Machine
Suffocation - Breeding the Spawn ~ Pierced From Within

Secondary Essentials:
Darkthrone - Soulside Journey
God Macabre - The Winterlong
Imprecation-Ceremony Of The Nine Angles
Kataklysm - Sorcery ~ Temple of Knowledge
Master - s/t ~ On the Seventh Day God Created... Master
Molested - Blod Draum ~ Stormvold
Pestilence - Consuming Impulse
Sadistic Intent - Resurrection
Sinister - Cross the Styx ~ Diabolical Summoning
Therion - Beyond Sanctorum

Honorable Mentions:
Atrocity - Hallucinations ~ Todessehnsucht
Blaspherian - Allegiance to the Will of Damnation
Carnage - Dark Recollections
Cryptopsy - Blasphemy Made Flesh
Dead Congregation - Graves of the Archangels
Disma - The Vault of Membros
Fleshcrawl - Descend into the Absurd ~ Impurity
Guttural Secrete - Reek of Pubescent Despoilment
The Chasm - Deathcult for Eternity: The Triumph
Ulcerate - Everything Is Fire

There ya go, ask in the rec thread next time bro.

Behemoth have never done anything significant in any genre they have played.

well thats your opinion.. i think they are one of the greatest metal bands ever.be it their old stuff or the new.

Ok, but what is the more objective impact on the metal scene they've had compared to most of the bands in the list I posted?

Not much.

I used to think so too, but they really pale in comparison to pretty much all the albums on that list.

I mean I think they were pretty solid up until demigod when they started becoming more commercial and have been just regurgitating the same riffs and ideas since then, but even with albums from them that I love like Grom or Thelema.6, they're still pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

That list is as good a place as any to start.

You should just also run along and listen to Desolate Shrine [the lot of you, really]. And Demigod. And Depravity. And Necrophobic. And Necromass.

I dig Demigod alot, I've been listening to it every now and then to get a feel for it. The title-track is so kickass

i like most of the bands on your list. dont get me wrong but i feel that behemoth on all levels are far more superior. im not gonna go through each band but behemoth to me is way more proficient than any of them. vocally i would put them on the same playing field because imo you can only do so much with growling vocals..

Early Nile and early Dying Fetus is good, but there is just soooo much better death metal out there (see:the list).Behemoth got terrible after Demigod.

Acid probably makes you feel less like a hedonistic raver piece of trash, too.

Do yourself a favour, TS, forget everything you know about Death Metal.

Now go listen to; Perdition Temple, Grave Miasma, Grave, Dismember, (early) Entombed, Backyard Mortuary, Excoriate, Bolt Thrower, Cerekloth, Nunslaughter, Ignivomous, Incantation, Immolation and Funerus.

If none of these bands tickle your fancy, then you are a false.

Especially Incantation.................

I'm proud of you guys for descending into an argument about Behemoth rather than an argument about trueness, nihilism or Cluedo

You've already got some answers TS but if you want some more take it to the recommendation thread
