I feel like playing video games just isn't fun anymore and like i should be playing guitar when I do get myself to do it. TV seems completely pointless. I even sometimes feel like interacting with other people is something i should do rather than something i really want to do since i could be getting better at guitar....anyone else have this problem?

Same here. I hate watching TV now. Before I started playing, I would be on my Xbox a lot or watching TV. Now, if I'm watching TV I almost feel bad, as you said, I could be getting so much better at playing my guitar if I were to spend as much time on that as I used to on the Xbox.

I had it last summer.
Stop buying video games or sell your console.

I stopped playing video games [only occasionally I do though] and guitar playing improved.

that.
However, don't neglect other people. Video games and guitar are your free time. People are worth more.

I got this problem pretty bad when I got netflix four months ago. I am trying really hard to practice for at least an hour a day again.
What?! There's a clean channel on my amp?!

Stay away from video games. Their terrible anyway. What, is like the twelve call of duty coming out now? People will buy anything with a 'COD' label on it. TV sucks with the exceptions of How I Met Your Mother, Colbert Report, Always Sunny In Philadelphia, The League, and Important Things With Demetri Martin. Netflix is for that though. Sell your console and games. You should probably still hang out with friends though...

I stopped playing guitar once I started playing video games (at age 17) . I play video games more now obviously. Video games are social for me, I only play multiplayer and I like to talk to people while I'm playing. I have no friends that play instruments, so guitar is something I do completely on my own.

I definitely cut down on video game playing since getting serious about guitar. Even the games I do play tend to be very slow paced, I can play with one hand and fret scales with the other. Any time anyone thinks I spend too much money on guitar and accessories, I remind them that they've spent just as much, if not more, on their consoles and games.

But whether its guitar, TV, video games, or chronic masturbation, don't let your hobby to drain your social life though. When you're good, people will love to hear you play guitar.

i disagree. video games are fine until you turn into the fat 8 year old that does NOTHING with his free time except play CoD. ive had call of duty since the day it came out, and still havent prestiged yet.

guitar is just like anyting else.....the more you practice, the better you will get. perfect practice makes perfect.

I think thats awesome. You are motivated right now and you have to take advantage. Spend as much time practicing/playing guitar now because you LOVE it. Keep the games for when you get tired or bored or sell em for more guitar gear if you wanna go all out. Feed the need my friend.....

No way in hell im gonna get Modern Warfare 3. i use to play xbox so much, now if i get on at all it'll be to talk to friends if theyre on for a little bit too.

I'm like this right now not that playing guitar isn't fun. I think it's when I'm about to get something that will drastically help my playing I stop playing as much until I get it...
Idk why..

I'm sitting around watching TV. just emailed a chiropractor.
my left arms been feeling weak lately. think it's tendinitis. hopefully he can get it sorted. I can still play fine but don't won't to overdo practice before I know what it is.

I've been the same since I started playing seriously..

But I would advise you to not stop interacting with people man, bad call.
People and friends are important, very much so.

This winter I spent the whole time in my house without going out, and I found myself becoming more and more lethargic, paranoid, depressed, and stopped doing anything.
Feeling weak, lazy and unactive.

When I started going out again I felt completely revitalized, hopeful once more, happier etc.

So yeah, keep your motivation going with guitar man, that's awesome.
If you feel like playing videogames every now and then when you're bored, whatever, and don't give up people!

Good luck

Which is like half of serious gamers out there. Games now and then are fine. I mean the Assassin's Creed series is awesome. Just game it up in moderation...

i play video games only once in a while now since i started playing bass. i haven't beaten a game for years cause i just easily lose interest now. same thing with tv.

I've always had this mentality.

I altogether stopped watching tv and video games about a year or 2 ago. Not as a conscious decision, my time just became completely filled up with music. It's gotten to the point where I will delay sleep to the early hours of the morning (I mean like, 7am) just so I can keep playing/practicing/composing/learning. A few months ago I went back to video games, but I can not stand to play for more than an hour, and after playing, I instantly pick up the guitar or my drum sticks.

I actually used to put pages of the real book up on one screen, and a game on the other (dual screen ftw), and would alternate sight reading and playing whatever game I had on there, just so even the most rudimentary tasks such as sightreading quavers could be prolonged purely for the fact that I had something to do if it became too tedious. This worked with the game too. I could play for as long as I want, because I spent the majority of that time sight reading anyway.

Social interaction though, is a must. Even if you are a shit hot guitarist, you will never be good enough to get by JUST on your playing. Even if this is just knowing people for the sake of gigs and connections, you will need them just as much as chops. And that's just for the music side of things, let alone mental health and social issues. :P

When I first started playing yeah, try to find other musicians to hang out with. Then you can interact with other people to so you dont become socially retarded.

No i interact with people but i feel a lot of times that it is like a guilty pleasure and i would spend my time better playing guitar - i realize the importance of social interaction i just have this little nagging feeling that I should be playing guitar when i'm just hanging out with friends

I feel this way a lot, where there is just nothing at all in the world except music. I woke up once and did nothing all day except play guitar. At 5 in the morning, after 16 hours of constant playing, I realized I hadn't eaten anything or spoken a single word. I go through phases though, I play video games plenty and occasionally I get too lazy for anything besides Netflix. I did once leave this party where I had a 100% chance of getting some because "fuck it, I need some guitar NOW."

I used to have the same thing, so i sold all of my videos games except MAG. MAG is too good to give up, its been a year and a half and I'm not bored of it yet. I have been improving my guitar playing a lot.

This sort of happened to me. I must have played my guitar for less than 2 hours a week for about 4-5 weeks before I got my 8 string. Now that I have that, I enjoy playing much more, and take whatever chance I can get to play guitar.

I don't care much for TV. I could never really get into any shows, so I rarely turn it on. I don't think I've ever really sat down and watched a show from start to finish in about 3-4 years (other then occasionaly looking up a show on youtube/ somewhere else on the internet). I'm not sure if it's guitar related, but I know I'd rather play guitar then watch TV or play video games. It's just that I find guitar more entertaining, nothing wrong with that.

i only watch TV while eating dinner/breakfast, and when i do it's only crappy cartoons or mythbusters because that's all my little brother watches (he controls the remote becasue nobody else in our family cares for TV) . i still play my xbox just as much as before i started playing guitar, just i spend more time on the dashboard just talking to my mates while i play guitar. However when i do actually play a game while the levels/ maps load is just do a few scales and random stuff for a few seconds. Also in pre-game lobbies which can get hilarious if your talking in-game, and when im dead in search and destroy. I once started the whole team singing "still alive" by playing the opening without realising my mic was on.

You people scare me.

Playing guitar 24/7 instead of socialising, exercising or doing other hobbies etc isn't normal.

Guitar is like a girlfriend, at first, you drop everything but eventually, you'll drop the guitar to play CoD.

Happens to a lot of us. It made me think, "Damn, I wonder how good I would be if I started guitar/bass earlier and didn't play so many video games?"
