FELIX RANDAL the farrier, O he is dead then? my duty all ended,
Who have watched his mould of man, big-boned and hardy-handsome
Pining, pining, till time when reason rambled in it and some
Fatal four disorders, fleshed there, all contended?

Sickness broke him.
Impatient he cursed at first, but mended
Being anointed and all; though a heavenlier heart began some
Months earlier, since I had our sweet reprieve and ransom Tendered to him.
Ah well, God rest him all road ever he offended!

This seeing the sick endears them to us, us too it endears.
My tongue had taught thee comfort, touch had quenched thy tears,
Thy tears that touched my heart, child, Felix, poor Felix Randal;

How far from then forethought of, all thy more boisterous years,
When thou at the random grim forge, powerful amidst peers,
Didst fettle for the great grey drayhorse his bright and battering sandal!

Above is the poem ''Felix Randal'' by Gerard Manley Hopkins.
Here's my question:

Can the word ''fleshed'' be described as a phenomime which is emphasised by the alliteration in the same line?

I have my Leaving Cert English Paper 2 tomorrow and I'm just wondering if what I plan on saying makes sense.

Thanks Pit, I think...

I just came into this thread to say we have the same first name.

I have nothing else to contribute.

I probably wouldn't describe the word "fleshed" as a phenomime, however I'm normally a bit too overly pedantic on these sort of things, so I would say go with your heart, unless you get some solid proof that it is incorrect.

Oh and good luck in the LC.

"Fleshed" is part of the "f"-sound alliteration, if that's what you're asking. I've never heard the word "phenomime" before.

Thanks guys. I've been searching for the word for a long time and it really adds to me essay (although Hopkins might not even come up).

Yes. Alliteration is based on sounds not on the beginning letter.

I say yes.

JOLLY GOOD EDIT: Just re-read. Yes, it can. My point on alliteration has no value, but yes, for what you are asking, yes it can.
An Augmented 4th or a Diminished 5th?
