Remind her she's not Japanese from time to time, anime/manga is fine, but if she actually wants to BE Japanese...ick. You don't want that.

I messaged her and asked said in Japanese Phrases.
Good evening. How are you?
I asked her if she'd like to talk on messenger..
If it doesn't make sense I'll just say I tried translating it, to no avail. Thanks for your efforts UG.

Well -

Shinai - within a city; local
Yo - (after a noun) used when calling out to someone
Ni - indicates such things as location of person or thing, location of short-term action
Kansha - thanks; gratitude
No - used to connect a descriptive to a noun which it is describing
Warui - inferior, poor, bad

So I'm not sure why she's saying something like that to you, honestly. She probably just got it from an anime or manga and is regurgitating it, IMO, but I'm only just starting out in Japanese.

EDIT

100%. Japanese is super context based - one word can mean several things depending on what's used around it.

Maybe she meant to say "shinai you ni," couldn't that be something like "in order not to do..."

Quote by MakinLattes

Those things never works as well as they should. I'd use a dictionary translator and do it a word at a time, then connect the pieces like 'no' and 'wa', etc. to put it together.

What he posted the girl saying is out of context anyway. It could mean several things depending on what was said before or after - shinai can refer to a city or a bamboo sword depending on how you use it.

The only concrete term there is 'warui.'

It can be several things, that's why context is needed.

boku wa kimi no ichiban...*

Isn't 'kimi' referring to the other person - like 'you' ?

Not being a smartass - I genuinely want to know As I said, I'm just learning.

Or that's like saying, with kimi in there - "I am your number one..." ?

Oh, I thought that's what you wanted to say. Yes, "I am your number one..."

But if it was just supposed to be "I am the number one..." then it would be just "boku wa ichiban"

I'm just learning too

Yeah I was going for I'm the number one -"

But thank you I appreciate the help - wasn't sure about how to go about saying "I'm your," so that's why I went with I am the...

Appreciated.

Damn I wish I had a teacher for this

Spanish wasn't too bad to learn from books and Telemundo, but Japanese is a whole different animal. I don't know if I can learn it on my own like I did with Spanish.

Well I'm not using textbooks or classes or anything, got inspired by AJATT. Have you read it? Basically a guy who became fluent in 18 months by immersing himself with Japanese stuff for the most part of the days, writing about it how it works/what exactly he did.

He also recommends the most awesome learning tools (imo) like the SRS (download Anki) and Heisig's Remembering the Kanji (read up on http://kanji.koohii.com/, awesome forums there).

It's funny because that "method" is pretty much how I learned English, but I never thought I could try another foreign language like this and would need some kind of classes. Now I think language learning should have nothing to do with school.

You'll realize quickly how most of what he writes feels like random rambling though. I was a little skeptic at first because of that, but reading on made me really appreciate his work on there. Oh, and don't bother with the stuff he tries to sell.

Also this "video introduction" probably won't help much, but it's fun to watch. The guy behind the camera is a douche though.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J34i9lr94pI

Another person who I like to watch who holds the same beliefs (input > output, the most important is to be exposed to the language) is this man: http://www.youtube.com/user/lingosteve
He speaks like 10 languages and his videos are a little more structured than that other one.

The key thing is to make it not to feel like work though, you make sure everything you do in order to have yourself exposed to the language is fun. Therefore it won't be enduring or require lots of motivation

I can't tell you how many times I have been led on by weeaboo girls. They always turn out to be lesbians, complete bitches, out of their ****ing minds, and sometimes a mix of all three.
