Okay, so over the last two weeks people at my high school chose and voted for our senior year's "Most School Spirit, Best Hair," etc and there were 2 candidates for the guy for Most Musical. One of them was my good friend, he's probably the most musical person in the school, he plays guitar, trombone(in band), bass, drums, sings in chorus, writes his own music, and is incredibly smart theory wise.

The other candidate is this guy who's one of those acoustic guitar hacks. He's played the same 2 songs in about 3 years, can't read music or tell you a key signature, only seems to play to get girls, and knows about 5 chords total.

He, the guy who was not my friend, won Most Musical.

So all these non musicians are talking to lots of people pretty much bowing to the guy, saying how he's the best musician in school and me (along with other musicians) are freaking out, because my friend truly deserves the award. And maybe two or three of my nonmusical friends are getting all mad at me because they can play a few chords on a guitar and want the same amount of credit that my friend has to musicians.

My parents are getting mad at me for thinking the guy doesn't deserve the award (my parents aren't musical)

Is there some way I can get over being musically elitist, if you could call it that? I have one more year of high school. Or should I just know what music and musicianship is, and damn those who get in my face about it?

Yeah, write to my fanclub about it, honey.

These things turn into popularity contests. The acoustic guitar guy is what people like, so they voted for him.

On the other hand, I think your mate who play the load of intruments and knows loads of theory should have one.

My freind, who I jam with, plays viola, bassoon, guitar, violin, piano and knows loads of theory too. I had to mention that for some reason.

I know what you mean and it is annoying. You can't dwell on it though because it really doesn't matter.

I know the feeling, you just have to get over it after a while. The fact is most people don't care about theory or how difficult writing one type of song vs. another type of song is and will show a positive reaction towards what they like, and considering that music is supposed to be subjective I don't necessarily see this as a bad thing. Though it does seem like your friend got screwed over a bit.
#13
Maybe get over the fact that nobody gives a **** that you can read sheet music or know musical theory. Chords speak to people, guitar wankery or general complexity doesn't.

No it's not freaking me out. It's just pissing me off that my parents and some of my friends think I'm wrong. I know it's high school. I don't let things (like this) get to me. This is an isolated incident.

If you want to be a 'winner' in life, you have to like the taste of shit on your lips and the feel of scabs on your knees, because the world where you earn merit based on skill is gone.

Whoever's the most popular, accommodating, or ingratiating gets ahead. Sadly.

I'm not saying stop being who you are, but don't let it get to you - that's just what the world's turning into, and it's gonna get even worse for you when you get out of highschool and into the work force, trust me.

Conversely, music isn't something that having a vast knowledge of or being able to voice a myriad of theories on a guitar will spell skill, in my opinion. I'm not taking a dig at your friend, so don't take it like that, but music is a forum for an exchange of emotions or ideas - if he can do it with a thousand notes and someone else can do it with no theory and four chords, why is either better and not that they're both good musicians?

Either way, you can't get all bent out of shape over stuff like this. Save that for real injustices.
Do you feel warm within your cage?

Doesn't seem like he'd get anything from winning the award anyways, aside from recognition, a possible ego boost, and self-satisfaction. Be humble with your abilities, man.

3 Years from now no one will even be able to remember who won any of those stupid class superlatives. Live and let live because you either move on from high school and go live life, or you're one of those "glory days" office clerks who never left.

its just high school. i didn't win most musical and i could play guitar WAY better than the guy who won, but he was way more popular than i was. sure i was pissed at first, but then i just let it go and graduated.

Obviously it matters to you, and there's nothing wrong with being bothered that a friend didn't get the recognition for his skill he deserves. In fact, I'd say you were more despicable if you didn't care at all that he was passed over for something he deserved. Complacence isn't the answer to frustration or anger, and pursuing that just makes you vapid in the end.

It's fine to be bothered, but you've gotta put it in perspective and realize that in the bigger picture, not winning a highschool 'honor' is tantamount to little or nothing at all aside from it being a bummer that he didn't get recognized for his skill.

Being humble is nice, but being a pretentious twat is a better way to get attention, and getting attention is the best way to win high school superlatives.

Don't worry about it, man.

You stop being a cunt and realize that your taste in music sucks, your friend's taste in music sucks, and that you can know all the scales and modes you want, but it's not going to matter if the music you play sucks. Which I'm guessing it does, because "your friend" would have won if it didn't.

Lets be fair, if you take a person playing Jazz and a person playing stuff from the top 40 then you know who the average person is going to like more. It's not about who's more talented, it's about what's cool at the time.

For example, I feel that Mark Lanegan is more talented than pretty much everyone on the radio these days, but who's more popular?

It's high school. Honestly who do you expect to win? A band geek or a kid who gets laid for playing guitar?
#37
you seem to have forgotten one thing: the ability for music to connect with people. take Bob Dylan for example. how much theory do you really think he knows? his songs all use fairly basic chord progressions. he's really not a very good guitar player. but, he's one of the most well known and respected musicians of the last 50 years. why? because he's a clever guy who can write songs that you can relate to and connect with. same thing with Nirvana or the Ramones. they write songs that connect with people, which is what music is ultimately about, unless you are one of those people that only writes for themselves and makes music for the sake of art.

so obviously, the acoustic guy has him beat there. get over it, and don't take shit seriously.
There's no such thing; there never was. Where I am going you cannot follow me now.

High Schools are full of idiots. If your friend wants to have a career in music, he will. As for the other guy, **** him. He'll be somewhere else, maybe operating a business with his charm and knowledge of how to screw people over. He might be very rich and powerful, but he won't be a musician.

I don't argue that 4 major chords and 1 minor chord touch people's hearts, but my friend isn't one of those twiddly twiddly kirk hammet shredders. He puts his heart and soul into the music he makes, and a lot of it's not that speedy or incredibly technical, but it contains more to it that than G, D, C, D. He writes incredibly emotional music. The acoustic guy only has him beat on popularity, nothing else.
