Discuss Steamboat . I've been having all these food cravings (those will recall all my food threads ) but my favourite of all food is the Steamboat! Westerners are probably new to this concept but it's basically cooking various meats, vegetables such as Chinese Leaf, Tofu, Mushrooms, seafood and various noodles over the boil with a soup base (Hot/Chicken/Spicy/Seafood etc...): - it's mostly an Asian way of cooking, originating in China, there are country variations such as the Korean Hot Pot and the Japanese Shabu Shabu.

Not clear on the idea?

Still not clear?

Watch this short video - I found a short video on the Japanese Shabu Shabu variation

I've seen it quite a few times. There's places that have it in London and Birmingham, but I'm yet to try it.
What sorts of meats do you get?

Thinly cut slices of beef, lamb and pork. . Go to your local Asian supermarket and you can find the equipment for it and the ingredients to cook it at home. I host ocassional Steamboat sessions at my flat a few times a month.

Steaming = healthier
healthier =less tasty
So grilling > steaming.

Not completely true but the sauces and spices involved in Steamboat - you can't say it isn't tasty. The boil has a sauce base but when you take the food out, there are sauces you put on such as chilli and ginger.

Grilling things just makes them taste of charcoal and grease. Steamed vegetables are amazing.

^ ^
The lamb sounds pretty awesome. I'll have to go and look for some

Here in Bavaria, we have quite the same thing called fondue here and it´s basically the same, judging by the text & pictures. International good taste, I say.

Hot pot is great, except its just not exactly fun when you're the only one filling the pot with food. I like filling it with chicken, lamb, beef, pork, shrimp, and scallops. When it comes to vegetables, its just the skinny white mushrooms and some peas. Best part is the soup.
#18
Love hotpot, not really the season for it atm though lol.

The best bit is at the end when you have run out of chunks of meat and veg to throw in and the "soup" has really developed with scraps of the meat etc still in it. Throw an egg or two in and some rice for a risotto-type deal or some noodles for tasty ramen

I'd like to try it but, I'm having a hard time separating it from fondue. How is it different than that?

Because fondue is more of a light meal/snack where you dip veggies and fruits into cheese so it's like a sauce more than anything else (right?)

But hot pot is a boiling pot of soup that is used to actually cook raw food, so it's a lot heavier.

...modes and scales are still useless.

Fondue can also be cooking raw food in a pot of boiling broth.

Then it's the same thing, but I've never seen that kind of fondue. Usually it's chocolate or cheese...

The vegetables are good I don't really like of meats cooked this way. Personally I like sushi with this style of vegetables and just normal steamed rice (not a fan of vinegar-y flavoured rice that I'm usually served).

^ The meat cooked this way is the healthiest and it's sooo tender. My favourite ingredients with any hotpot is Beef Shabu Shabu or Bogulgi, Shredded Pork, Tofu Squares and Chinese Cabbage - this dipped in sesame chilli oil with the base being hot & spicy

i thought shabu shabu was like a thailand form of heroin+ecstasy+speed+caffeine or something

anyways, i can eat a lot of hot pot, i like the way the vegetables soak up the flavor of the broth

i prefer korean bbq and the like, though. I can eat literally 2-3 pounds of pure meat this way.
#35
Nah, the Shabu Shabu is the Beef Meat you put in the Steam boat but it is also the name of the Japanese Variation of the Chinese Steamboat.

hot pott is giving you a bunch of meats and vegetables and saying "okay, go and boil this shit yourself"

fondue is more giving you various foods and saying "go dip these in these dangerously high- cholestrol liquids"

watched lost in translation for the first time recently, had a really special insomniac, surreal-ish feel while still being totaally rooted in real life aesthetics/ themes

ive visited around tokyo so much but nobody in my family ever felt like going off to the busy, citylife of tokyo, so i always stayed in the more rural, peaceful suburban area my family members live. I never got to see the tokyo drift side of japan :[
