Hey guys, I was just wondering what your thoughts on the IMF situation was. The IMF got hacked and whole bunch of sensitive info got stolen. IMF stands for International Monetary Fund, and they basically oversee the global economy.

Some of you will know, the former IMF chief, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, is in trial right now for attempted rape. But is it right that hackers are targeting the IMF for its cheif's wrongdoings?

Anyway, here's a link to the story if you want to read more.

The hack occurred months before DSK was embroiled in his latest scene of the global theater.

IMF has plenty of wrongdoings, as an institution, to justify the hack, though.

They're a necessary thing, but they are just like any other bank.

The part I don't understand is, what kind of web security did these governmental organizations and corporations have? How come they're getting hacked so easily? It's almost pathetic. Yeah, no security is impenetrable, but this is too often and seems too easy.

That's like saying the UN oversees global peace...

The IMF is a joke.

So, hacking them is about as useful as hacking a non-profit, religious organization.

Hmm, I'd laugh, but this could actually affect the economy. >_>

Nah, nothing really new, there really is just a lot of vulnerabilities from careless/trusting programmers and networking, if you know what to look for and how to exploit it.

There is a number of ways to gain access over any server, and it's hard to cover all of the holes, especially if you don't even know what the holes are.

And organisations have been hacked since they began using computers, it's just that the news has done a much better job at picking up the stories recently. I remember seeing a (nonfiction) book about how an incredible hacker was forced to go black-hat while trying to do something good, (he patched a couple US military servers, obviously a very big no-no,) and was caught. He pretty much started stealing all kinds of information from sites for people willing to pay, and the customers of the company often never even knew that their info had been stolen, as a result of the companies keeping it a secret.

Probably the chinese. Wouldn't surprise me, they conduct activities like that on a monthly basis. I spoke to a guy who's a computer IT architect (?, I only know the french term for it) and he says about 4 months or something ago the chinese GOVERNMENT straight up tried to hack into canada's banking system. And they got pretty close. Just like that, hey what are we doing today, oh you know just the regular commie stuff, research of resources, ummm spreading of wealth, ummm what else keeping an even keel with our other friends in other countries by hacking into their bank systems....

Au contraire, mon petit ami, they have to meet with heads of state all the time and have all kinds of financial and market statistics.

You dump the diplomatic cables and statistics, and you can move the market overnight.
