I'm still pretty new at the whole tubes thing, going to handle getting the tubes in my Crate Palomino (V32) replaced for the first time since buying it...for the preamp tubes I purchased 1 JJ 12AX7 and then 2 tungsols, would anyone have a recommendation for order of placing these tubes into the amp for the best compromise between more clean headroom and "warmth" of the sound?

You should really have a tech replace you tubes because you need to bias your amp. Which a trained technician should do

You don't need to rebias preamp tubes.

I suggest you just try them in different places and see for yourself.

^^ he's got three preamp tubes. You don't need a tech to do anything.

'generally' speaking tungsols are brighter sounding and JJs are darker sounding. Just pop them around in different positions until you get what you like.

i have a vid that might help you.....

I'd pop the Tong-Sols in the input stage and the phase inverter stage(assuming it's anything like the preamp stages of a Valveking) and the JJ in the gain stage, which should be the middle spot.

+1 assuming V2 is the gain stage and you slightly more/different gain, i would put the JJ there.

but really just move them around. it takes but maybe a half hour to move them around whilst playing for a bit and get them where you like them.

i have spent a couple of hours rearranging tubes in an amp (lee jackson), to get it sounding its best and its worth it.

Just don't forget to use a rag or gloves when swapping the tubes if they are still hot. They hurt.

I prefer to have a Tung-Sol in the V1 for the the clarity and definition

I prefer to NOT have a Tung-Sol in V1 because they are so damn bright.

Both have lots of gain so JJ in V1 gets my vote.

So.......mess around and make your own mind up. I'd probably get all JJ's

Haha I like to use it to balance out my MkV. That said, I use JJs in my Krank Rev Jr Pro to tame the bright and harsher nature of that amp.

thanks to all, I'm having a friend of mine (who actually builds tube amps and thus knows more than I) do a complete tube change while I'm on vacation so I was just curious what to suggest to him for the arrangement...I guess I'll try the JJ in V1 and then the tungsols in 2&3 for now then if the jj is likely to have a "warmer" tone to it, and if i dislike that then i'll take the time to open the amp up and mess with it myself
