Sorry to always write about this subject, but atleast im not jabbering about the modes (heh!)

So, I always hear that people say you should make a practice routine to stick with each day to make the best progress, but in this video he says JUST PLAY: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZ3IxYQpxpk (Rob Chappers)

I have also read this in many other places, that you should "just play" instead of routines.

What is really the best way to go?

1. Have a organized practice routine with stuff i want to improve on, and play a little.
2. Just play much and skip the routine totally! Songs, improvising and such.

Or how do you practice?

Thank you very much for answering!
You should be doing both, in my opinion.

Some things you need to focus on to improve - focus on them when you want to improve on them. Practice doesn't necessarily mean doing reps of exercises, if I sit down and jam and focus on certain aspects, that's practice too.

As you mature as a player you get a better idea of what you should be doing with your time, sometimes it's practice, sometimes it's playing.
