I search-barred and didn't find anything of relevance.

Well basically Pit I am terrible with money, and I have come to the age where I should start saving for various things (i.e. to help get me through uni and to fuel my interests)
but I just don't ever seem to be able to save. Every time I get money or paid I somehow work out a way to spend every penny.

So Pit what techniques or things can I do to help me actually save my money?

I usually change it to a different currency , say british pounds, that way it is not easy to just take it and spend it right away.

Always pay yourself first.

Monthly pay comes in, savings money goes out. The rest is your free money. Never start spending before you've paid yourself.
#5
Get a bank account, and put the money into your savings account. It's designed to not let you spend that money very easily.

Trust me a savings account did me no good. I had one and emptied it pretty quickly and have nothing to show for it.

Spend it all on whiskey, then once you've realised you've spent all your money, you can drink your pain away!
#9
Make your own meals. Walk/ride a bike if you can. Don't "hang out" that often. Do other things in addition to a regular job, like I do math tutoring and guitar lessons. It's some quick and easy cash. Don't give yourself the opportunity to spend.
#10
Get a job making more money. Preferably where they'll take money out of your paycheck before you get your grubby hands on it and invest it for you.

^Banjocal speaks the truth.
I actually saved up 50 euros per month (quitted like 4 months ago) just for getting rid of the habit of going out to eat a pizza or a hamburger or a good spiced steak with smashed potatoes.. I miss that last one really, but I'm very pleased with my savings that will fund my next guitar (hopefully anything else won't get in the way first..)

Then you, sir - or madam - have no resilience to temptation!

Seriously, start budgeting your weeks ahead and force yourself not to spend a penny over what you know you have. Sometimes you'll find yourself going over a bit which is fine as long as you pay it off quickly before the banks charge you.

Also, learn to cook. Seriously. You might want to reach for that easy meal so you can do whatever shit you think you need to, but actually learning to cook can save you money in the long run. If you're living in a place that has the appropriate cooking resources of course >.>

I'm usually very good at saving my money, I used to spend NOTHING ever, but now I started going out more and I eat at this amazing sushi place with friends which charges 20$ ish and it's all you can eat, plus it's around once a week on average, so that's almost 100$ per month i could be saving.

They probably lace the sushi with coke or something....

Mine is in my mums name, and only she knows the bank which it's in. So at the beginning of every month, i hand her what i want to save, and she puts it into the account for me. It's a lot harder to spend money when you don't know where it is

I can live on ridiculously low sums of money when i have to. Like, the week before payday, i can get away with spending £10 on food. Yet the week I get paid, i spend about 5 times that per week

Put it in a savings account.

This. Most of my pay checks go right into my savings account and I don't touch it.
I only keep out enough money to pay the bills. Your less likely to spend your money if you have no money out of the bank to spend.

I have no idea what you spend it on, but whatever.

80% of my money used to go to drinks, up until a couple of weeks ago, when I started to notice that. So quit drinking or smoking or whatever it is that you burn it on.

Also, come to terms with the fact that better gear is a luxury. You really don't need more than a basic guitar and a 20 watt amp.

And yeah, buying food at random times can cost you loads without you realising.
#20
What you really need is a new amp..

No, but seriouzly, you can save a lot of money by making your own food from buying stuff from stores instead of eating out. Also beer and drinks are a lot cheaper at stores than at bars so drink a lot at home/friends place before you go out. Actually, skip everything you do out (drink/eat/whatever) and do it at home for less than half the prize!

Instead of having A banking account, I have TWO. One savings and one checking. Half my paycheck goes in each and I can only easily get to the stuff in the checking so I save the other half. Not that I don't save most of the checking money too, but that's my limit for "going out" money if I need it.

how old are you, becuase without this critical flaw, we dont know your needs.

im a pro at saving, but still manage to be broke due to general life expenses, ie food, rent, power, fuel, gas, phone, loan repayments, weed.

make a budget, actually sit down and write out what your expenses are for every week compared to how much you earn, i pretty much do this every fortnight before i get payed, once i have money in my account, it only lasts for about 1/2 an hour once im done paying bills and putting it into 3 accounts which i have. my everyday account, savings account and a interest account i litterally cannot withdraw without having to go into the bank and see a teller.

in average, i put away 50 dollars a fortnight, not much i know, but i like to live comfortably and savings are savings, im hanging out for my tax return, should see a good 2-3 grand return YOU BEAUTY!!

TS I have the same problem. When I didn't have a job I could save so easily, now it's so hard

Couple things I've learned
1. Going out to eat burns alot of money fast. cook at home, I go to the grocery store and buy something I can microwave at work and enough gatorade to last me two weeks. As opposed to going out to eat.

2. Stay in the house, I don't mean be anti-social, but next time your friends ask you to grab a bite tell them your not hungry and to have a good time without you.

3. Use your debit card sparingly, this is the root of my problems. It's way too easy to pull out my card and start spending, I try not to even take it out of the house most days.

4. Don't spend it before you get it, I used to think of all the things I wanted to spend my next paycheck before I even got it.

I'm not sure what to tell you. I've always found it rather easy to save money. I try to only spend money on things I need, and limit how much I spend on leisure activities.
#34
My mate gave me a good idea that works fair well;
You get one of those money tins/piggy banks/whatever and put $20 or $50 in it a week, it does take some self control though not to open it.
#35
I just collect all the money I get, just put it away somewhere and not think about it. I rarely spend it, so when I want to get something like a guitar or pedal, whatever, I get all my money, count it, and over time I end up saving quite a bit. Just ignore it and pretend it's not there.

This always worked for me: When you see something you like and want to buy it, ask yourself if you want it or if you need it. Saved me from buying a bunch of junk I really had no used for.

Of course you can buy things you want, but think about how much you want it and if you can still support your needs and have money leftover.

I am currently paying to attend university and just started making payments on my rental house. I save up by putting half of my money into savings, and simply not buying anything I don't really need. Also, riding bike whenever possible saves you boatloads of gas money.

Every pay I take 100$ and put it in an envelop (sp?), and hide it.

So in a years, that's 2600$, in three years I'll have more than 7500$.

Just do this TS, hide a part of your money from you, and soon you'll be rich.
