So today I headed down to watch the Canucks/Bruins game downtown. We walked around for a good hour or so until we found a nice Sushi place to sit down and eat. While we were finishing up we heard that a car had been flipped. At this point I headed out with a few friends to go see what was up. I called my brother and told him to go home as well.

One of my friends and his girlfriend left because they have finals tomorrow, the rest of us stayed.

Eventually we were walking down and we found somewhere were a car had been flipped and set on fire, riot squads had the area blocked off.

Now this might seem kind of stupid, but honestly we didn't think the riot would get serious or anything so we decided to take some pictures next to the police.

As we were taking the pictures (ill throw em up in VIP later) bottles started being thrown at the riot squad. At this point we moved away and then shots of something were fired into the air.

My friend and another girl decided to go to McDonalds to grab some food and use the bathroom. My other friend and I decided to stay and watch from what we thought was a good distance.

About 30 seconds later the police started tear gassing us, I looked around and my buddy was gone. Crowds started running towards us, I headed back towards McDonald's thinking I'd be able to get in and maybe just chill till it was all over.

Unfortunately they locked it up.

So I continued down the street with the crowd, I ended up running into two friends of mine. As we were walking down the street I saw 3-4 people wearing balaclava's just smashing the shit out of storefronts.

About 10-15 minutes later I ran into another group of friends. I hung around with them trying to find one of their brothers, no luck so I decided to try and find my other friends I was with earlier so I could GTFO.

Everytime I tried to meet them somewhere the streets would be completly flooded with tear gas and you really couldnt go anywhere. I asked a cop if he knew were we could go to not get tear gassed and he told me to **** off. Wonderfull...

I continued walking around looking for a way to get to my friends. As I was doing this I was in a relatively calmer part of downtown and some ****ing retard just runs by and just pops a cop in the ****ing head.

Anyways, at that point my friends tried to get a hold of me so we could get back and out of there. I tried meeting them but everytime I did it was all gassed out.

Eventually I managed to cross a bridge and have a friend pick me up. What else really pissed me off is that one of my friends wearing a Red Socks hat apparently got jumped and is in the hospital with a broken leg. :noplease:

And here's a video, pics to come in a bit.

That video was fairly early on, like definately before shit really started going down.

I am really shocked that this is the only thread about the riot in Van, which easily surpassed the 1994 Cup riot as far as participants, and probably cost as well. 15 cars were overturned and burned, 9 Vancouver police officers were injured, as well as numerous officers from neighbouring departments and members of local fire departments. Anyone caught in a Boston jersey had the living shit stomped out of them, and any upstanding citizens trying to calm people down were assaulted as well.

It is really disgusting that these criminals behaved in such a way, disguised as hockey fans. Two bridges were eventually closed and the only way out of town was by an already crowded public transit system.

Also, I'm definitely a little upset about the Canucks' loss, but nothing that would warrant this kind of a reaction. I'm definitely waiting to see what the players have to say about the riots.

I don't know how they (the authorities [police, fire department], NHL etc.) didn't expect this to happen, especially after last time. I would've liked to have thought they would've learnt their lesson. Obviously not though.

Maybe they thought people wouldn't act like idiots over some hockey game.

Seriously. It's just hockey.

Their response this time was directly based upon reports conducted after the 1994 riots. The fire department had members on the ground throughout the area so that the fires could be dealt with in an appropriate order so that they aren't wasting resources on smaller, relatively controlled fires.

I think that the biggest mistake was in putting up the screens for fans to watch downtown. Obviously there still would have been a problem if they lost, but there were a lot of people out there and in danger when they weren't in the past.

I think the best way to do would have been to hold the game elsewhere, or ban the canucks competing from it all together. As much as I dislike the sport, that's one thing soccer does right in larger tournaments, all the games are held in a stadium neutral to almost all competing teams. This problem is largely avoided then (apart from the English twats, but they will no matter what...)

When they rioted in Vancouver in 1994 the game was in New York.

Aah well then. My sources have lied to me (what I get for trusting the television.... >.>!
Just ban the team out right then.
I wish they had banned England from the soccer European cup when it was discussed several years ago for the fans doing this shit.

I feel sorry for all the poor souls that got this angry over watching some people they don't know compete in a sport.

In keeping with Canadian spirit, we rioted when we lost. Hell, we would've rioted if we won too. At least it was the Canucks that lost. If it had been the Habs getting beat out by the Bruins in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals, I'm pretty sure Montreal would be nothing but smouldering ashes by now.

Also, someone posted this earlier on Facebook. ****ing harsh man (at 3:06 a bunch of people push a guy and kick him while he's down).

That would involve Canadians taking a loss in hockey any less seriously than Pearl Harbour.

Montreal had a riot the last time they won the Cup, forget losing it.

Also, at Hard Rock Hallelujah.

And it's nice to see home town hero Mark Recchi ending his career on a highpoint with his 3rd Stanley Cup. We're certainly gonna be seeing the cup in town a lot sooner than if the Canucks had won. Just gotta head down to Mark Recchi Way
