My friend has a 212 Peavey Valveking. We think the power amp tubes may have died. He's ready to replace all of the tubes to restore the amp to a clean bill of health.

Right now, he plays various types of metal, so whatever power/pre tubes could get him the tightest gain would be best. Cleans aren't exactly too important to him.

He would also not like to spend all the money in the world on this retube, any help would be greatly appreciated!

JJ 6L6s are the most popular choice for VKs afaik. Matched pair are $36.95 CAD, and since this is the 212, one would need to buy two pairs.

look up euro tubes and they have re-tube kits for the valve king. Not too bad of a price ether.

^ JJs are still available in the states, and the dollar is roughly par. Plus we pay obnoxious tax *shrug*

ask advice at Doug's tubes or the tube store web sites.

They are usually pretty on the money once you tell them your specs and what type sound you're after.

Doug's tubes has an especially good reputation for testing/quality assurance... the same cannot be said for every tube dealer out there.
