Am I weird for liking melancholic pop/rock like Coldplay and Snow Patrol?

I mean, on this site people tend to agree that bands like these aren't worth much. At least that's the impression I get. And while that kinda makes sense - as this is a site for musicians and music like this isn't that complex musically - I don't really see where the hate comes from.

Sure it's simple, but sometimes beauty comes out of simplicity, right?

I'm just interested. I'm not the biggest Coldplay or Snow Patrol fan myself, but I appreciate their stuff. Do you think it's boring? Annoying? Or do you just dislike it out of principles because it's popular among 14 year old girls?

Radiohead?

It's not weird to like any genre. I hardly like anything most other here like.

Most people here listen to metal, progressive rock or classic rock.

I don't like either of those genres really.

I find Coldplay annoying, but I quite like Snow Patrol.

Even more so, I love Elbow. I think they're incredible.

Pooping is well good though, to be fair.

Well, okay, I might have put that the wrong way, I don't feel bad for liking it. I'm just wondering why so many don't! Boring afternoon topic.

And I wouldn't consider Radiohead the same simply because they're a lot more complex musically.

I listen to a ton of music, some more obscure than other. But songs like "Fix you" or "The scientist" are what I guess you would call a guilty pleasure.

I really don't know what Radiohead is defined as to be fair. One of my favourites band but I really have no idea what genre they are part of and it doesn't really interest me

Well, the point of the topic was about bands that while considered "mainstream" and bland can still be appreciated, and Radiohead isn't really that. Radiohead is my favourite band, so I dare anyone to question them! :p

I enjoy a few Coldplay songs. The problem I have with them is that most of their stuff sounds roughly the same. It's a bit too "stadium rock ballad theme" for me. But they have some sweet melodies.

But after a while it gets awfully boring. That tends to be a problem with a lot of mainstream acts. They are a lot less varied in their sound.

A few of my favorite artists are

The Clash
Radiohead
Bob Dylan
Tom Waits
Peter Doherty

And to be fair, all of these artists have changed style and created new stuff quite heavily. That's something I really enjoy.

I know Coldplay has several good songs. Both of these bands sound very bland and ordinary to me.

I'm not a fan of either Coldplay or Snow Patrol and I tend to dislike bands that sound like them. That said, I don't really have a problem with them either and even if I did my opinion on mainstream music is invalidated by the fact that I fucking love Ke$ha.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that you shouldn't have to feel weird about what music you like. You obviously like it for a reason, no shame in that.

Who cares what you listen to? If it's good, it's good.
Two bands I'm obsessed about : Coheed and Cambria.

I've only heard three or four Coldplay songs but they're all really good, never heard Snow Patrol. A lot my friends' favorite band is Coldplay. I don't care for rock music, I generally stick to metal.

I'm not a big Snow Patrol fan, but I think Coldplay are alright.

Only Parachutes though, their new stuff is undeniably rubbish.
BTW No one dislikes me, and I'm popular among 14 year old girls

It depends, TS.

Liking Coldplay and Snow Patrol can be really weird if you're going for the grvm and kvlt image, even if said bands have some melancholic music. I know the tremolo picking towards the end of "Fix You" really gets you like a frvstbvtten black metal riff [hey, it gives me chvlls too], but it isn't trve.

Look up The Jesus and Mary Chain, the Cure and My Bloody Valentine.

You'll never look back at Snow Patrol and Coldplay

I like listening to songs that aren't necessarily the most technically difficult to play as long as the composition itself is well-arranged and the singers voice is tolerable.
