I got this message when I logged on tonight;

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I'm not sure spyware is exactly the right term to use in this case, as I'm pretty ignorant to most computer terms, but surely whatever has been used to detect the software installed on my computer is surely some breach of my privacy.

I use adblock only because I've had to deal with a few disgustingly outrageous ads, adhering to the forum rules, (reporting them properly,) and endure them when they have persisted and remained to annoy me.

I'm aware that this is not exactly a topic for the pit, but personally I'd be happy to remove adblock so long as I knew that I could use this website without being pestered by annoying video ads that you cannot pause or mute, (that often play three at a time,) and buggy ads that load in the same space as other ads, so that any attempt to mute, pause, or report them are impossible.

Hopefully this doesn't get closed immediately, as I'd like to hear opinions from fellow users. This is not a complaint (Apart from the 'spyware' allegation,) this is just for user discussion.

Do you think this is a breach of privacy?

PS: I don't have the means or the desire to purchase things over the internet, and I don't think I'd change my mind for this.
#4
How is this a breach of privacy? Every time you enter a website you're sending them tons of information about your computer, IP, ISP, and other stuff, detecting plugins like Adblock is the least personal information you're sending them.

Or are you complaining about the ad itself?
#5
It's not a breach of privacy, there are a number of websites that use this as they have generally tech savvy and mean client bases. It's only using the information that your browser sends to the website.

I generally turn AdBlock off when on UG, how else is UG to make money and stay afloat? You can't expect to have a free service and then refuse to look at the ads.

Get a new Adblocker that blocks the ad that detects your blocker of ads.

I got that too.

I went from feeling bad about not using UG Plus, to being kind of pissed off at it.

It's the same as websites detecting whether you have flash or not and then directing you to the appropriate site. Nothing installed on your computer.

Well my technically retarded mind is at ease now.

I'd like to pay for this feature, but I have neither the mean, nor the desire to purchase things online. The ads I'd been putting up with before getting adblock were pretty disgusting, and the forum section I used to report them just wasn't working for me.

I think I'm going to have it stop blocking ads from UG now. You've inspired me.

What you mean by disgusting? If it's viagra slapped everywhere, you may have a tricky trojan.

I don't really get all those annoying ads on UG. I do not click them either though, because they are very unrelated to my interests. I only see a small banner, but not those huge pop ups you guys are complaining about.

I think those huge ads only pop up in places where UG has a lot of users, like the US, UK or Australia. I don't get any of the huge ads either, and I've never heard of anyone outside of the English-speaking countries that does.

Urgh that thing is annoying. It seems to only appear if you're on the front page though, which I never go to. If they made that pop up in the forums...well I think I might have to kill

No, no, no.

Like, I'd have 3 video ads load simultaneously, and I couldn't mute or pause any of them.

I'd also get buggy ones that would load underneath/on top of each other, so that I could mute the one on top, but the one underneath it would keep playing, and any attempt to mute it would result in me going to the page from the on above it. Those ones were impossible to report because a picture is required in the bad advertising forum and it was impossible to see which ad it was if it was located underneath another one.

I don't think I've seen a huge ad, and I'm in the UK. I just get banners and the occasional irritating one that makes sound on a video page.

I've gotten this message too. I wouldn't block the ads if they didn't interfere with the page loading (which they used to on a regular basis) or if they didn't become full page every time I scrolled my mouse past them. As for the 'spyware' question, I would guess that UG is tracking our cookies just like most websites, not using spyware or malicious software.

To be honest, if a site is using loud video advertisements then I have no problem using AdBlock on them; I have little sympathy when they're using a shitty business model that impedes my usage of the site and fosters bad feeling among the community that make most of their content, in that case I'd turn on AdBlock until they forced me to turn it off or got rid of the offending advertisements.

UG has started using them on the forums, prompting me to turn the AdBlocker back on until they fix it (yep, sent a report, hasn't been responded to though).

Yeah, as I said, I'd be happy to turn ad block off and generate them some revenue the ads weren't so damn atrocious, and so difficult to report.

I've never seen that before.

I guess my totally free Firefox AdBlockPlus addon, which blocks ads on more than just this site, is working brilliantly.

Oh, and did I mention that it's completely free?

#26
I'd be happy to tolerate the ads on UG if they were more responsible in choosing which ones they allowed. Most of them are incredibly annoying. Incidentally, ever since I clicked off the thing trying to make me buy this UG plus thing, tabs don't display properly anymore.

You realise that EVERY website in the world takes information from you and sells it, trades it freely between each other. Thats how the internet works....its not a breach of privacy as you have not signed up to a contract saying they wont. Using a 3rd party ad blocker that restricts the advertisement is down to the discretion of the website owner. Its his discretion what filters and white lists they use to allow users on. Plus i dont get any videos or big ads, this might be due to your computer having spyware or virus's, more likely if your not computer savvy and your easily misled. I have a clean system and i get banners and occasion adds, nothing like what your describing.

And if enough people do it there won't be a UG.

I do realise that, but I didn't realise that that included softwar information.

As for the spyware or viruses, I'm totally clean, thank you very much. I always use protection. I'm not sure about the crappy ads either, which is why I've decided to deal with them the only way that works.

UG doesn't provide me with tabs, either...

Maybe if the adds were more relevant people mightn't get so pissy about them? Like, I never really thought of UG as a potential market for cream for cracked heels and eye sprays....

its UG's fault for people using adblock plus in the first place.

there are ways to advertise goods without slapping multiple unpausable video ads and rollout banners all over tab search results.

>implying that I give a damn

i'm not spending money to get rid of annoying adverts on a single website when there's a perfectly legal free alternative to get rid of adverts on every website.
if that's ban-worthy, then I guess i'll just get banned and be done with it

I think UG knows I´m poor, since I never have any ads on this site.

I'd also recommend that everyone instals noscript, another addon which should block the ads but might not be detected.

Pretty much the way I see it.

I'd assume those ads pay more, but less people would block them if those types of ads weren't on here.

Be grateful they aren't redirecting you away from the site and only using it on one page.

If they do make it impossible to use the site.. just turn off the ad blocker.
I don't think they are as bad as they were.. anyone remember the annoying mosquito ad?
