So I have this riff, the main riff of a song I'm working on. (Drop D)

Can anyone tell my what sort of rules would apply to riffs that would work with that one? How can I tell what key it's in, and are there notes I can't use in riffs in the same song as this one? Help me please.

Well it's in D minor from what I can tell. The 0 on the low D is a D and the 5 on the A string is also a D, one octave up. Mess around with notes around that area, the notes in a Dm scale are D E F G A Bb C D

There are no notes you "can't use" except notes that don't sound good. By placing yourself in the box of "I can only notes in the key", you're unnecessarily limiting yourself.

D E F G A Bb C D are the notes you can use its in D minor. If you need help with scale stuff you can use the website all-guitar-chords.com it has information on scales, chord progressions, and chord charts you can study hope it helps you out.
