i bought my self and epiphone les paul studio today, brought it home, plugged it in and played, after an hour or so i have noticed that my fingertips are turning black with some wierd powder, is it the strings?

Most likely. When a guitar sits in a shop (or anywhere) for a while the strings will corrode and turn black. That's probably what is on your fingers.

I used to get this. Replace the strings, make sure you keep your hands clean, and wipe down the strings after playing. That should get rid of it.

Yeah, my guitar did the same thing. It is most likely corrosion.

Sounds like old strings.

Get a new set of D'Addario strings and you should be good to go.

A good trick is to lightly wipe down your strings with a soft cloth after playing. It helps them last longer and removes the industrial metallic-kind of dirt you are talking about.
