Yes, serious question. Do you consider photography an art form? Why or why not?

Yes, but not in the traditional sense.

Anything can be an "art".

It can be.

Taking photos of your holiday destination and facebook profile pictures certainly don't count.

My answer is the same as the answer everyone else will give.

Yes. Timing that perfect shot, on top of getting the right angle, exposure, contrast, etc. can be compared to any other art.

Also, Kensai thread haha

Strike him down with sleight of hand.
And if heaven rides against us
Then God himself must be damned.

Yes. Its a bit of a wank to include painting, sculpture etc under the banner of "art" and then exclude photography. I suppose that one might argue that seeing as the majority of photography is happy snaps and facebook photos, it doesnt really count... but then how do you explain house painting?

Yes. Finding the right lighting, angles etc is difficult and can evoke powerful emotions if done right.

Also, multi-choice polls are never a good idea, the ability to simultaneously vote yes and no is troll bait.

I voted for all of them because I can. You should know not to do that by now love.

Personally I think that some is, some isn't.
Companies that that photos for businesses to advertise a product are kind of straddling the line, yes they have to put a lot of time and skill in composition into creating the perfect picture, but they also are only doing it as a 9-5 job and aren't really invested in the object.

Now those who go out, find the perfect landscape/person/object/light then take their time to get the aperture/contrast etc. just right then take their picture. Those are the ones creating art.

Teenagers who go out, buy a nikon mini slr and just start snapping away with no thought to form are not creating art.

Good photography counts as art, but taking a photo of a shoe with a sepia effect doesn't really count as art in my book.
WHOMP

Think of that next time you are not allowed to laugh.

Yeah, it's an art form. It's a medium of expression, so of course it counts. Just the same as painting, sculpting, music, or drawing.

Does looking at things count as art?

Does arranging goo into familiar shapes count as art?

Depends...

I take photos for the artistic side of things, I go for a walk and take photos very deliberately.
Camera whoring and drunken kissy mouth shots aren't art.

Art and photography is like champagne and sparkling wine.
Not all photography is art and not all sparkling wine is shampagne

Course it's art.

Why is the poll multiple choice?

As said before, serious photography is art.

POSING INFRONT OF A MIRROR WITH YOUR CAMERA CLEARLY IN SIGHT IS NOT ART.

Well, clearly he meant for Confucius to enter the thread and give his opinions!

"It is one, but it is neither."

"It is an art, but surely it isn't?"

"It could be one, but who's to say?"

Art is a very encompassing term. Photography is a medium in the same way painting is.

Of course. An infinite amount of feelings and thoughts can be expressed through photographs. Art does not really have a definition anyway...

You are EXTREMELY WRONG! I have played it. I own an 18W and it would be an awful stereo amp, it's way too bright, breaks up too easily and so on. Secondly, why would a guitar store sell an hifi amp.

People call that art... Not a fan myself.

Taking a picture of something then making all of it black and white except for one thing, which has been turned red, is not art.

However real photography can be.
