I'm using Audacity to record stuff on my laptop through a RealTek microphone input.

With the RealTek driver you have the option to listen to the mic input or not.

I turn this OFF so I don't hear the delay between playing & recording.

My recent recordings are full of terrible crackling.

When I turn listening ON, the crackling disappears but of course I hear the annoying delay when recording.

What could be happening?

you need to get an audio interface such as line 6 ux2, m-audio fast track, or focusrite saffire 6

these will reduce delay and crackling. they also come with drivers superior to asio4all

sidenote: if you plan on getting serious with recording switch audacity out with reaper, cubase, pro tools, fl studio, etc...
