The Locrian scale, being diminished, uses:

1 b2 b3 4 b5 b6 b7

However, the actual diminished scale is slightly different:

1 b2 b3 b4 b5 5 6 b7

Yes, it has a b5 and a 5, which gives it an extra note.

Chromatic scale is every note:

C C# D D# E F F# G G# A A# B C

The octatonic scales (Aka diminished scales, symmetrical scales) have only two modes:

The whole - half diminished scale ( 1 2 b3 4 b5 #5 6 7 )

The half - whole diminished scale ( 1 b2 b3 3 #4 5 6 b7 )

The chromatic scale is all 12 notes.

The Chromatic Scale isn't really intended for songwriting purposes - You can get certain chromatic passages, for example in Megadeths 'Ashes In Your Mouth'. It's also used for guitar exercises, for example sweep picking practice, picking speed... etc etc

It's just there, because, well it is. It had to have a name

It can be used effectively though, like in that song.

Not true. It's not even just for atonal music, either. Check out "Entrance of the Gladiators" (a.k.a. 'Thunder and Blazes.') It's completely written with the chromatic scale: it moves through a tonal harmony, but all the melodies are chromatic. You are right, Jack, it is mostly used for short passages and 'in-between' moments.
Nothing that is worthwhile in life will ever come easy.

Jack's right, the Chromatic Scale wasn't INTENDED for writing music. It's just a collection of the twelve note divisions in Western Music. When people write music chromatically, they aren't thinking with a particular scale in mind. They're just using any notes they like to create harmonies they find most pleasing (atonal music excepted).

Just, no. Locrian should be treated like that gay cousin. Just avoid him cuz he's weird, unstable, and is attracted to the wrong thing.

Big deal, I bought a hamster once and they put that in a box...doesn't make it a scale.
