Personally, I'm not a fan of our National Anthem. It's difficult to sing, it has an awkward meter (anapestic something or other), and the lyrics, as Kurt Vonnegut famously said, are "Gibberish sprinkled with question marks."

Why this strange, awkward song was picked over others like "America, the Beautiful," and "This land is Your land," I haven't the faintest idea. I am an avid patriot, but this is all that I can think when I hear our anthem.

Anyways, I made this thread to see how many of my countrymen felt the same way.

Poll coming.
EDIT: I forgot to put "America, F*CK YEAH" as a poll option. How embarrassing!

I agree it's difficult to sing, but that's why you don't get some random person to sing it at games, you get an actual singer to sing it.

Wouldn't you prefer an anthem you could sing along to though? Not necessarily at games and whatnot, but wouldn't it be good to be able to sing it like the Army does with "Army Goes Rolling Along?"

This is my national anthem

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhnUgAaea4M

EDIT: But in all seriousness it became so popular due to the fact that it was written to the tune of a popular British drinking song. Said song was extremely popular in the US at the time, and it was written about seeing the US stand resilient after the British Navy shelled Fort McHenry.

Patriotism at its finest isn't it? Beer and Patriotism go together apparently.

Piano dick had some good parts, but should have said "As the business man slowly gets boned", would have accented the whole dick feeling of the album

He wrote what should be the anthem, providing all the verses are used. The USA national anthem is a disgusting glorification of war.

It's in 3/4, which is fairly common. That's what waltzes are in, and what many popular songs are in (although by no means the majority)

I think the difficulty comes from the octave and a half range. I don't know why they don't just change the key, though.

Compared to many other countries (Russia, Romania, France) ours pales in epicness. The music (not the lyrics obviously) was taken from an irish drinking song.

Honestly, Russia has one the best national anthems by far: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMZfXN1UOpw

I meant the poetic meter, which is anapestic tetrameter.

I disagree. It sounds robust, dramatic and inspiring.

Agreed.

How are the lyrics gibberish? It's about our flag waving in the midst of war and surviving.

Read this with a critical eye, and tell me that it isn't ackwardly worded, and hard to follow.

Quote by The Star Spangled Banner
Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

I don't know what you're talking about, it's in a straight 3/4, easy to sing, and enjoyable and inspiring. If I could choose a different NA song it'd be This Land Is Your Land, but the full version that Tom Morello does.

No, they are in 3/4. the best part is that only part of our anthem is only performed.

No need to be rude, it was just a mistake.

our anthem should be "america, the beautiful". it actually is about the positive aspects of our country and its natural beauty. our current anthem's just about war. surprise, surprise.

that song is really hokey and dumb. the lyrical content is alright i guess ... i mean the message is ... but it should no way be the anthem of the US. it's not epic at all. it just sounds like any other redneck song except that this particular redneck happened to be a socialist.

Personally, I don't see it as too hard to follow, especially considering when it was written. I can see how people would see it as that way though. Tbh I think it's worded in an almost beautiful way.

Well, you can rewrite a 3/4 piece in 6/8 and vice versa, so it's a fair point.

theoretically. but one is compound duple meter the other is simple triple. 6/8 is 2/4 in triplets. 3/4 is ... well, 3/4.

Thought being a 'redneck' would mean the person would hate socialism and all that so it wouldn't apply to Woodie.

Also it would be nice to have a national anthem that isn't a load of annoying brass for once.
