I'm often accused of no musical taste; but not because I cling to bands, I really don't know how to find other bands. 90% of the time I listen to three bands:

Mostly Nirvana, alot of Dinosaur Jr and Alice in Chains, some Hole and Juliana Hatfield. However, When I go searching, I come up with nothing.

- I'd say I like Punk, but I hate almost every punk band (Rancid, NOFX. The Ramones are just "okay")
- I'd say I like metal, but believe me, I'd rather cut an acre of grass with scissors
- I'd say I like Alternative & Indie; but theres a millions diverse genres beneath that.

Honestly, I can't find anything. Am I comparing bands too much to the few I listen to or have I not found my taste? My brother said Most of what I like is Post-Punk, but I've really yet to find much. I'll break down what I like about what I listen to:

What I like:
- Punk is played a a fast tempo, and none of the bands I listen to are fast. Listen to "Repulsion" by Dinosaur Jr and "Scentless Apprentice" by Nirvana.
- I like melodic distorted stuff thats catchy. Punk has fast riffs that may sound melodic, but the saying isn't if the music is.
- I hate Emo Punk. Bands that sound like Paramore and Jimmy Eat World doesn't agree with me. At all. Or bands like Nickelback and Maroon 5. And seeing as how I like a lot of 90's stuff, It'd probably hover around there.

I really appreciate the help. It drives me apeshit that I have little influence. If I write songs, I would be a copy of Nirvana like Creed is of Pearl Jam.

Let the flaming begin.

grunge. last.fm is a good place to start diversifying based on what you already listen to.

Most of what you like isn't post punk, though it'd be a lot cooler if you did listen to a lot of post punk. You listen to mainly grunge and 90s radio rock by the sounds of it.

And please learn what emo is before you start pissing on it, thanks.

Is fingering an emo chick that likes yoy and that has fallen in love with you is it wrong to you to finger her during lunch outside in front of everyone at the high school? would you not care or lol even wish it was you?

Well, grunge was more of a movement then a genre. But I have been using last.fm, and its a really cool site.

Well based on what they write about and sound like, I don't have many good things to say.

I'm pretty sure "grunge" was a genre...

My point is you couldn't name an actual emo band if you tried, so please inform yourself before you say you hate emo when what you really dislike is pop-rock.

You like soul music. Go watch Blues Brothers then buy an Otis Redding album.

Are you saying Jimmy Eat World isn't? And Paramore could strike an argument, but JEW is definitely emo.

Well your three big Grunge frontrunners:

Nirvana - sounds like slower melodic punk
Alice in Chains - slow melodic metal
Pearl Jam - different than both; more classic rock sounds to it.

EDIT: My opinion isn't dominant, so you can be totally right; but that argument isn't my main concern and its just an opinion I formed based on what I've heard. Sorry.

Melodic death metal?
Arch Enemy maybe and the like
It's spelled wiener.

You sound like you'd like Local H. If you like them, then you like grunge. Whoever told you grunge is more than just a simple genre is far too pretentious to like the genre in the first place.

And this is emo:

If you still dislike, whatever, but now you know.

I consider it both a genre and a movement, however I think the movement involved bands that weren't really in the genre. Like Hole and Smashing Pumpkins. Also, Alternative & Indie is not really a genre, it's two descriptive terms of music. Alternative Rock is a genre. Indie Rock is a genre.

Here is a list of bands you would probably like based on the bands you mentioned:
Local H
Soundgarden
Tad
Mudhoney (then Green River, as it was members of Mudhoney and Pearl Jam before those respective bands were formed)
Smashing Pumpkins
Pixies
Sonic Youth

Here is a couple of bands you may like:
Screaming Trees (more psychedelic grunge)
The Melvins
Temple of the Dog (members of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam)
L7
Flipper (you say you like slow punk, these guys basically invented that)
Sex Pistols (for a classic punk band, they've got relatively slow tempos)

Thanks, a helpful post that didn't include my sour opinion of emo

I'll be looking those up in a bit. Thanks

Jimmy Eat World get filed under emo quite a lot by people who know their shit. I'd call them a pop rock band with a lot of emo influence. No problem with them being classed as emo. TS still doesn't know stuff though.
My name is Danny. Call me that.

I second iwannabesedated's list. Especially Soundgarden and Pixies. You should also check out Mad Season if you're an AiC fan.
