Hey guys, so I'm in a hard rock band, and was wondering the sort of average solo time for a hard rock song? Reason I ask is when I write guitar solos they always tend to be within the 20-30 second range, do you think this is long enough or should I look at extending them? Some songs have more than one solo.

The Solo should be as long as neccessary for the song.
Don't solo, if there's no need to solo!

The worst thing anyone can do in a band is force themselves in where they're not needed or hold back when they are. Listen to how the song is coming along and see if you can come up with a solo that fits and ADDS to the song. Don't play a solo just for the sake of having a solo. Don't play a long solo in a song that doesn't suit it and don't stick a short solo in a song that demands a long one. November Rain would be shit with one 6-bar solo. 2-minute shred odysseys don't fit in Avril Lavigne songs. There is no average, you have to judge it song-by-song.
