Have any of you watched TV shows that you didn't expect too much from, only to be pleasantly surprised by them?

One that particularly surprised me was Showtime's The Tudors. I expected it to be a little history and ALOT of sex, sex, sex, sex, and sex. I watched it with my girlfriend (who only really wanted to watch it because she thought the actors were attractive, and.... as I said, sex sex sex) and, while there is LOTS of sex, I was surprised to find that there were moments of very solid acting and very good storytelling, and was particularly impressed by the score of the series.

I'll give a few examples:
1.) A great monologue by a disgraced minister and Cardinal in England just before his suicide
2.) The musical score for Jane Seymour's death
3) Great exchanges between Henry VIII and his Fool after Jane's death
4) A great trial scene

So anyways, I came expecting not really much of anything, and left surprised by many good scenes of acting. Anyone else have similar experiences?

LOST

...ohh wait, no surprise. Shitty show, no questions answered, dragged on way too long, everyone dies.

I expected The Big Bang Theory to be funny.

this! I don't get why everyone loves this show so much. I mean, it's kinda funny but not the best show on TV, and I can't stand laugh tracks. It's like they don't expect people to know when to laugh. I would much rather watch Parks and Rec, Community, Modern Family, or It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

They didn't all die. Why does everyone think that? It was so obvious. It specifically said that some of them made it off the island and died later (Sawyer, Kate, Lapidus, ect)

But yes, they didn't answer a lot of the questions.

Agreed. The only good/tolerable character is Sheldon. The rest just bug me.

My dad always watched the shows about like "Auction Hunters" and "American Pickers." Basically the hardcore Antiques Roadshow, and I always thought he was crazy for watching them. Then I went and visited him on vacation, watched a bunch with him, and I fell in love with these shows. So altogether: Pawn Stars, Storage Wars, Auction Hunters, American Pickers, and Hardcore Pawn.

Hard times of RJ Berger. Expected this to be completely lame, but is really pretty entertaining. also Blue mountain state, thought that would be more american pie and less funny. turned out to be the contrary.

Nerd: We're going to go buy comic books.
Hot Girl: Whaaaaaaaaaaaat?
Nerd: Remember when the Death Star blew up?
Hot Girl: Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh?
Nerd: Spiderman has a "spider sense."
Hot Girl: I don't geeeeeeeeeeet iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

Whoever writes this show should be punished. Okay, I ****ing get it, she's hot and probably doesn't own a lot of comic books--you can't make an entire tv series based on one joke (over and over and over and over again) that's not really that funny in the first place.

I'm also not sure why there's a forum for tv shows on UG...not too bothered by it, just perplexed...

No, to be fair, I've only seen like 5 episodes, I decided early on that it was a show I didn't want to waste my life on

Game of Thrones

This.

I felt it got massively overhyped, compared too much to being the new Lord of the Rings (I'm a pretty big fanboy) and it was on an American network - in my experience they don't do this type of show well.
But I was very impressed with the first season.
It just annoys me slightly that the next season is also going to be called Game of Thrones

I like to confine my sex watching to porn. And maybe one or two scenes in a movie where theres a hot actress, then move on.

If you're trying to follow a plot, too much sex distracts me, and if you're trying to follow the sex, too much plot distracts me. TL;DR, **** multitasking in films

I always expected Scrubs to be shit..
Since I started watching it recently, no other can satisfy me as much..
Must be that beacause I'm new to it, ot something, but I find the emotional output, writing, characters and comedy if that show to be amazing.

Also, if films are allowed, I expected The Hangover to be just a stupid film about people getting pissed, when I watched it I was pleasently surprised.
Never imagine yourself not to be otherwise than what it might appear to others that what you were or might have been was not otherwise than what you had been would have appeared to them to be otherwise

Big Bang Theory is filmed with a live audience, not a laugh track.

As for me, Pushing Daisies. I loved that show so much I would watch it with my ex and now I can't watch a single episode anymore, god dammit!

Scrubs is a terribly unfunny show, and Zach Braff should be put through a human-sized meat grinder feet first for his awful performance. The blond doctor should be spared so she can be not funny on Mad Love.

Oh god, that show. I couldn't decide for the longest time whether I liked it or was just addicted. The episodes "Whore" and especially "Kill Them All" tilted that balance rather heavily. Can't wait for the next season, even though they had to replace the lead actor.

The Guild and The League are both shows I expected to be just "hm sure that was mildly amusing" funny but mostly lame and then turned out to be "MUST WATCH MORE" hilarious. I also typically don't like serial crime-solving dramas or sitcoms but Bones and How I Met Your Mother have been able to hold my interest for like 6 seasons each.

To be fair I only watched the first couple episodes of each series but I was surprised that Entourage, Scrubs and Curb your Enthusiasm are not funny. Scrubs and Entourage were a little interesting but I wasn't even close to laughing.

Oh and Sunny in Philadelphia's first 2 episodes do not represent the rest of the series. I was really surprised when the characters stupid attitude got a million times worse in the 3rd episode.

Wasnt there a prequel kind of season or something? I cant find it anywhere but I was told that it wasnt a "second" season per say, but like a before the first season season.

Yeah, it's like six episodes, and it's called Spartacus: Gods of the Arena. Kind of a prequel thing, get to see how some of the characters got to where they are. I watched it on Netflix.

Curb gets way funnier later in the series.

Game of Thrones. I saw a few previews, didn't know much about it and didn't really expect much of it. After a couple of episodes I was hooked and started working my way through the books.

Father Ted. I thought it was going to be a pretty standard rubbish sitcom because the only thing from it I ever heard was people shouting 'ARSE' and 'FECK'. But then I watched it and of course it's amazing.

Whatever, I still hate having to hear people laugh while watching a show. They overly laugh at every single line which makes it 100x worse too.
