I'm looking for a new laptop for college. I've been looking at both Macs and PCs, and I'm torn between both computers. I've always been a PC person my whole life. My last computer was a Toshiba Satellite, which I was pretty happy with. It was a good computer, but the reason it broke was my fault...I've dropped it so many times and didn't take good care of the power cord, which eventually went...and then on the last fall, the screen cracked. However, viruses seemed to slow it down a lot...which I think is a big plus for a Mac as they don't get viruses. But then again, I could just install a good virus protection program or maybe even Linux on a PC. IMO, Macs are built incredibly well, but they are so darn expensive and don't give you much for the money...(a big hard drive, lots of RAM & USB ports, etc)....

I'm just so confused now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

PC = Mac

Edit: Also I don't suggest you use Linux if you don't even know what kind of computer you want.

If you are into recording or composing (as I am), buy a Mac. Not only will it last longer (I've had mine running on 6 years and haven't taken it into the store once or had anything replaced) but it will perform much faster and more efficiently than a PC (in terms of music anyway). Only downside I have encountered is that nobody makes games for Mac but seeing as I don't play games myself... I don't give a s**t.

That is true, but I highly doubt they gained their idiocy through their lack of use of Linux.

Oh wow, perform faster? Last longer?

I can claim the same thing as you man. It's how people treat their gear and how they keep their stuff clean and working.

I've been running the same Acer laptop for 5 years. No problems.

corrected.

OT: I still like pc. Windows 7 works really well and doesn't have the issues vista did. If you get some virus protection and use common sense, that is not an issue.

I'd go with a Mac if you can afford it, but definitely get 3rd party RAM and HD upgrades. Apple charge a huge ripoff for extra hardware. I bought a baseline MacBook 3 years ago for £700, another £80 got me up to 4GB of RAM and 320GB HD, compared with the £200 odd that Apple wanted for the same product. Apart from that (and a power failure that thankfully came under warranty) I've been pretty happy with this little laptop, the specs aren't that impressive (2GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, Shitty Intel graphics, no DVD writer) it's still running really well. It hasn't slowed down over the time I've had it, the whole thing still runs pretty slickly, and the OS is really polished and smooth. Games wise it's atrocious because of the graphics chipset but I'm not really into games so it doesn't bother me. It's still a good machine for recording and mixing (I hook it up to a secondary 1080p monitor for that) and the battery still gets over 2 hours, which for an ageing laptop is pretty decent. I'm not looking to upgrade again until at the earliest next summer, and for me that's a really long time to keep a computer, I usually keep as up to date as I can afford to but I've had no real reason to replace this one yet.

Windows is no more open source a system than Mac. There are huge amounts of open source software available for both. Mac gets a lot of the Linux software because they're both built on Unix so compiling the code for one when you're already doing the other isn't nearly as much effort as porting between Windows and Unix based systems.
You're using UG classic, congratulations.

Makes no sense.

Windows = Mac = Linux

Preferences people... You are all musicians and you all like different brands of guitars, gear, and different genres as well, and that doesn't mean one of them is better than the others.

PC vs. Mac has always been a stupid discussion.
Fender Jaguar -> Polytune -> Diamond Compressor -> Timmy -> OCD -> Big Muff -> Line 6 M9 -> Sonomatic Cheddar -> Spark boost -> Fender BDRI

If you have the money, get a Mac. They're built well, no viruses, and if you get Applecare, it's one less thing to worry about in college.

I'm a PC person too, but I was advised by trusted friends who had already been through college to get a Mac.

PC, always. Always.

If a PC is properly protected and you have the rare ability known as logic, it's more than safe.

And, a Mac generally has alot of 'lololo i'm a mac, therefore i have greater prices yet other laptops have the same equipment and are cheaper'.

Eh, I think uneducated might be a better choice of word for most people. But essentially, yes.

Also, keep the *fag insults to the chan sites. We like to pretend we're more civilized around here.

Unless you're using it for editing/graphic design, macs are pointless.

Which I'd concur with. People focus their efforts on fields they prefer. So we may not all be programming genii so we go for a Mac based OS or Windows based OS because it's "Simple" language comparatively.

Want compatability with almost everything; buy a computer and install XP and look after it.
-Requires maintainance to keep it running well.

Want something just to do web browsing and document editing; buy a netbook/laptop and install a Linux OS and open office.
-Requires a learning curve and hardware driver hastle

Want an expensive but well built computer with an easy OS; buy a Mac with more pros than Linux but at a cost.
-Low maintainance but expensive.

I'd just buy something with windows and take care of it. There are good free virus firewalls out there.
You can also install windows on a mac BTW and visa versa (although that's a lot more tedious).

Although No doubt someone is gonna go lolololyou're ALL WRONG

I have never regretted upgrading my windows laptop for a mac. It's lighter, faster, intuitive to use and doesn't get viruses. I would recommend it to anyone.

Plus if you're a student you get 14% off which is pretty good.

Depends, if you want it for Graphic design/editing/music then you should get a mac. otherwise there is no real point in owning one. A PC with good antivirus and some common sense will be just as good and cheaper

So you walk towards the mac?

Also, contrary to popular belief, Macs CAN get viruses. It's just really rare.

You can run OS X as well Windows on a Mac.

You cannot run OS X on a PC computer. (Legally)

Macs are aesthetically pleasing to most people. They look sleek, modern, clean, and what you would expect something that you pay at least $1000 dollars for.

If you have an iPhone, iPod/iTouch, or any other apple product you will have no issues between the different devices.

PCs are easier to upgrade and customize.

If you are not retarded a PC can also run just as well without viruses like a Mac.

Well allow me to correct you sir but there is no reason to own a Mac in the first place.

To those people saying Macs don't get viruses/malware

I agree that Windows gets more, but I am running Windows 7 with Avast! and I visit some filthy websites but my PC is fine and I only run malwarebytes scans every few weeks.

MACS DO NOT SPECIALIZE IN DESIGN. THEY RUN THE SAME F*CKING SOFTWARE AVAILABLE FOR WINDOWS AT THE SAME PRICE.
