First off let me say it can sound clean but when I turn the volume up to distort it It is more intense than I would like. How can I fix this? It is a Piggnose g40v and it sounds great clean, I believe it is the stock 12AX tubes that make it so distorted, any cleaner tubes? Or tips?

12au7's have less gain than 12ax7's but I'm not sure how much of a difference this will make.

There are a variety of 12AXX preamp tubes you can use, you might find a 12AU7 to be a little TOO much when it comes to reducing preamp gain. In descending order of gain (I've seen these in a different order, but this is the way I was taught), you have: 12AX7, 5751, 12AT7, 12AY7, 12AU7.

Try some JAN 5751, theyre a little lower gain.
Though volume is overdriving your power amp valves.

Though if its sounding a little fizzy they might just be getting old and need replacing.

Ive heard 12au7s sound pretty shitty and thin.

Turn the preamp volume down the master up.

This. I've not really found much use for them in amps outside of studio preamp/mic preamp applications. A nice set of JAN tubes would indeed work wonders for your sound. If it is power tube overdrive you are trying to tame, again having a look at some NOS/Old Stock tubes of different brands can have a noticeable effect on your sound.

Is this a new problem or has it always been this way?

I have a JAN 5751 and I don't notice that much difference in gain from a JJ.

I'd try a 12AT or a 12AU but as becky said - it may be time for new power tubes or you may have a different problem altogether.

Also - can you post a pic of this amp

12AU7's will not always work in a 12AX7 amp. Quite often they will just turn up their toes and die. The ones you can use are 12AY7, 12AT7 and 5751 in order of increasing gain.
