I'm spending some time in Sweden and I've noticed people going round to public bins and taking out all the plastic bottles they can find and collecting them in bags. If it was just one person I would have thought they were just a bit odd, but I've seen at least 6, so can anyone explain this to me? I'm guessing there's some sort of initiative where you get paid for recycling but that sounds weird to me..

Well if it's anything like in Germany you get a certain amount of money for each bottle. Here, depending on the material, you get 8 to 25 cents per bottle. It started a few years ago when the government decided it's reasonable to make the people recycle. I think it's a good thing :/

edit: like this

We recycle. Always. That's how our sanitation works. Plastic bottles give 1 krona a piece back. 1 krona = 1/7th of a dollar.

We are good people.

It's not that uncommon here where I live. People even take shopping carts full of cans and bottles. I don't live in Sweden by the way.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that people do get paid for it.

I am in no way disagreeing with you. I just think it's even worse when he replies to a thread or something and twelve different people all say "just kick over his bike !!1!!!!11!!!! ololololol."

In some houses and apartments we will basically get fined/ a telling if we just throw our bottles along with the garbage. So recycling is basically the most common way of dealing with plastic bottles in Sweden. That and dumping it all in Norway when we go on vacation.

Sometimes our fellow comrades have it rough financially and have to resort to going through the trash to find things to recycle, which pays money. It's double plus good.

I believe you mean: Sometimes the proles have ungood cash groups and require trashswim to untrash things, which acquires cash groups. It's double plus good.

Do it here in Finland too. Not out of bins but yeah, like at an Ice Hockey game you see kids going round collecting the bottles people have left over on the floor

In supermarkets they have machines you put the bottle in and you get money back for recycling it

The bottles (vodka) people leave at Ice Hockey Games pretty much cover Finlands entire budget. True story

I wonder if I could collect loads of bottles here that are either worthless or very close to it and take them to sweden, or if shipping would outweigh the return I'd get for them.

Seems relevant.

They have recycling barcodes on them that you need to scan into the recycling machines, so it only works on ones you've bought in Sweden.

Also you don't actually make money from them. You just get back the extra you spent when you bought it, since the price of the bottle is included in the sale.
