EDIT: Skip down to my latest post, I have somewhat decided on the Mesa Boogie dual rectifier I just need some extra opinions on it.

Budget: Hopefully under $1000 but will spend up to $1500 if necessary (I don't have a speaker cabinet already so if I get an amp head that will have to be included in my budget.)

Genres: Metallica, ATR, COB, Megadeth, most metal really. I also love Paul Gilbert and other virtuosos like Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson. I really want to be able to do heavy metal stuff but also have really nice cleans.

New or Used?: I will buy used for higher end stuff.

Home or Gig?: Mostly at home right now but I occasionally play with drummers and I would like to be able to perform in a band.

Closest City: Albany, NY and I know there is a guitar center there which I've never been to a GC but I plan on going there soon so I need to know which amps to try out.

Current gear: I play a Schecter Jeff Loomis 7 string through a Line 6 Spider III 75 watt which at this point I'm convinced anything will be better than it but I still want recommendations as I'm looking for slightly higher end gear and I don't want to get some kind of specialist amp that is only good for one genre.

Also I'd just like to state again please don't recommend me some amp head that costs $1000-$1500 because I need a cabinet to go with it so if you can recommend me a head and a cabinet to go with it that would be great, same with combos.

I love the new line 6 MkII amps I have the 212 its great. Buy the foot board and your set. Go from Oli Hurbert to Jonny Cash. No Problem the little spider amp isn't the greatest. other then that go Randal or Madison. and get the older randall xl cab regardless. Big balls and plenty of bite.

If you can get the dual recto, I hate you. These are the sorts of deals you can't get in the uk, it would cost over £1000! Carvin cabs are good, but if you can try out orange or mesas own cabs. Just look used, there'll be some floating around somewhere.

The main thing that draws me away from getting a stack is the fact that you pay $1,000+ for an amazing head and you still have to dish out another $500 for a good cab since I don't already have one.

I'm kind of thinking about buying a nice cab first so then I am kind of forced to eventually get a nice head anyway lol. Only downside to that is I'd have to tough it out with this stupid spider III for a lot longer than if I were to just go and get a Peavey vypyr tube 60 for $450. What do you guys think?

Here is that same head at GC for quite a bit more money.

GO play the head, and see if its in good condition, that price is a STEAL. Don't worry about the cab as much now. You can even get an avatar 2x12 for pretty cheap.

Alright so I'm pretty sure that I want the rectifier my only problem is in most of the videos I have watched they don't sound as clear as something like the 6505, it seems overly bassy and mid scooped. I just wanna know will having EMG pickups, and getting any kind of pedals allow me to get the same clarity as the 6505?

Also, is this a good amp for lead playing? Cause I like to play a lot of Paul Gilbert's solo stuff like Scarified and stuff and all I've heard people play on this amp is down tuned rhythm with the same crappy, muddy, overkill bass tone.

Despite all the bad I hear about/from it I have faith in my ability to tweak it's tone and I just wanna make sure I will be able to get what I want out of it.

Here is Paul Gilbert playing with a Dual Rectifier, so you're set.

You can see the head in this video of the same clinic.

And as far as Emg's with the Dual Rec., have you ever heard of Metallica before?

Edit: Here's Scarified.
